No, the vids are in avi, the music is in mp3, and the photos are in jpg. All of them play or view just fine, I've watched many avi's on the PS3, I just don't understand the round about way to view them off of a flash drive.

I have the same problem and I havent been able to figure it out either. Have you tried changing the name of the video folder to movies or something similar? I transfer movies from my PC all the time with my thumb drive and watch them using my PS3 but I cant ever get it to come up normally, only by doing the same method you mentioned. If I stream using Windows Media Player they pop up automatically but Ive had nothing but bad experiences with watching something streaming from my laptop to my PS3, so I just deal with it.

Here's a PS3 question I've had for a while and never asked, it has to do with seeing files on the PS3 off of a flash drive. I've got a drive that has a PS3 folder, and inside it there are VIDEO, PHOTO, and MUSIC folders with the appropriate media in them. To see these files on the PS3 I have to go to the USB device under the Video menu for example and press triangle and then Display All. How come the videos don't just show up when I press X on the USB device. It always says there's nothing there. I have to press triangle then Display All every time. Is there something with my directory structure on the flash drive? It just doesn't make sense why it works this way.

Are they in subfolders? I think it will only detect the videos in the first folder, not sub folders.

What do you mean exactly? Are you saying instead of doing PS3>VIDEO we should just put it in the PS3 folder and leave it there? I think Ive tried that before and it still didnt work but I will check it out again sometime and let you know.

There are folders inside PS3 folder called PHOTO, VIDEO, and MUSIC, but inside those folders are some files and some folders. It reads everything, it's just weird that when I click on USB device it doesn't see them, I have to click triangle then Display All on the USB device. It's just weird, maybe that's how it used to be. I still use TVersity most of the time for transferring files, but doing it off a flash drive is faster. Everything works, just in a round about way but maybe that's how it is for everyone.

Well, display all read everything... but from what I remember you need to have any videos saved directly to the VIDEOS folder. I don't like doing that so "Display All" works for me.

What I'm asking is do you have folders inside the VIDEOS folder like "Movies" or "Shows" just to organize things, or are they all just thrown in the VIDEOS folder?

EDIT: Just videos under the VIDEO folder, no other folders. Do I need folders under the VIDEO folder to see them when I click X on USB device instead of always having to click triangle then Display All?

I'm gonna try it with folders under the VIDEO folder and see if that works. Like I said, it's not a big deal, it's just weird that you don't see anything when you click X on USB devices. I'm gonna google it some more and see if there is something I'm doing wrong.

It could be Sony's strange format where all .mp4 videos need a thumbnail....

I think I have a couple mp4's on my computer that I created. Maybe I should put those on the flash drive and see if they show up without using the Display All.

I think it might need a thumbnail... we had to do that sort of thing early on in the PSP's life cycle... you couldn't see a movie unless it has some strange thumbnail format, like "MP40001.THM" included for each video.

Does anyone know how to open a ps3? I'm trying to take these screw caps off the back, but it's hard as hell.

The only reason I'm doing this is because I want to try and make my ps3 work again, rather than having Sony charge me $150.

FYI, if you open it, Sony won't even let you pay the $150 to fix it. I'd just let Sony do it, you probably fried the graphics card or the BD drive is dead. Neither you are going to be able to fix on your own for less than $150 if at all.
