Ive noticed that for the first 10-15 when I turn on my new PS3 the screen flickers every so often. Is that normal? Also it sounds like a crackling sound as if it's warming up

      Any suggestions?

I have the same issue...not sure if it's a bad sign. I guess we'll wait and see.

I've never experienced the screen flicker. On my slim I do get some loud popping noises coming from the console itself... pretty sure it is the plastic expanding as it heats up.

So the HDMI port went out on my ps3. Is it worth it instead of getting it fixed getting a good component cable? Is the quality from AV to component that much better? I have a vizio led 3d tv.

Personally from what I've seen it depends on the individual tv but usually it's not that drastic. Everybody has a different eye though. I'm assuming with an led tv that you're displaying at 1080p which is where it would show up the most. Also depending on how you're running your audio, component cables won't pass full stereo sound, only two channels. If you are just sending the audio through your tv's speakers then there will be no difference. One last thing, DVD's don't get upscaled through component cables so if you do any movie watching through the PS3 just go ahead and get it fixed.

I guess the bottom line is that a component cable is cheaper and a quicker fix then getting the PS3 repaired. Get a cable and try it out. If you don't notice a difference then it's a win.

Gotta use HDMI for the 3D to work.

Thanks for the quick reply. Right now I'm using A/V cables and the horrible quality is driving me crazy. I'm hoping there's at least a noticable difference. I found a pair of Monster cables on Amazon for $15. Its especially hard playing games with darker color palettes like Skyrim. Maybe in the future I'll get it fixed but this is temporary.

Oh man, playing with composite cables sucks! I guess I read and answered your question as a HDMI vs component question. Component connection is HD while composite is standard so obviously there will be a huge improvement there.

Yeah, mine did that the first few months after I bought my PS3, but since then, I haven't heard a peep (knocking on wood now). The only noise I hear is that dang audio pop noise when I play Madden 12.

Cool on the popping but the screen flickering is the main concern at this point

I downloaded a ton over the weekend and hate to do that over again.

I'd try out a new video cable if you haven't yet. You might have a dud of a HDMI cable.
