Re: Official PS3 Discussion Part III...

In regards to this post in Part II of the PS3 Console talk: Nyko Blu-Wave Remote available for PS3.

I already had the Sony PS3 Blu-ray Remote but I was disappointed that I couldn't make my Harmony remote learn its commands because the Sony remote worked through Bluetooth. But then Nyko released its Blu Wave remote which will let you learn the commands with a Harmony remote because it uses IR through a USB receiver that plugs into the PS3.

Anyway, I just wanted to say that the Blu Wave remotes works great. Actually I haven't even used the Blu Wave remote except to learn its commands in my Harmony remote. Now I can control all my video, DVD, and Blu-ray viewing on my PS3 through my single Harmony remote, thank goodness! It probably took me a little over half an hour to get all the commands learned on my Harmony from the Nyko remote, and I had to lower the sensitivity of the Harmony's control over the PS3 because it flew through the PS3 menus, but now it is all set up and works like a champ.

There are only two drawbacks with the Nyko/Harmony remote for operating the PS3. The biggest is that you can't turn the system on from the remote like you can with the PS3 controller or the Sony remote. It's not that big of a deal because when you insert a disc into the PS3 (like a Blu-ray) the system automatically turns on and your remote is ready to go. The problem is that I keep forgetting to turn the PS3 back off when I'm done because I'm so used to the Harmony remote shutting all devices off when I hit the off button. The other drawback which isn't a big deal at all is that the Nyko remote only has the basic DVD playback functions on it, so they are the only ones my Harmony remote could learn. But all the necessities are there like play, pause, stop, chapter skip, scanning, menu, even the triangle, circle, etc buttons are there. What buttons the Sony remote has that the Nyko doesn't are ones like subtitles, etc, buttons that you really don't need when watching under normal circumstances.

All in all, I'm real happy I bought the $14 Blu Wave remote and I'll probably try to ebay the Sony one now that I have no use for it. Luckily I have one of the PS3 models that has 4 USB ports on the front, so leaving the USB receiver plugged in all the time isn't an issue, I don't know if that is a problem with the 40GB's that only have 2. I definitely think it's worth the purchase if you have a programmable remote that will learn the Nyko commands so you can keep your movie watching to just one remote again.

          Nice write up.

I need to pick that up to work with my Harmony 670. It's nice having just one remote, but having to break out the PS3 remote always sucks.

Thanks Kevin, I didn't know that the Sony remote was Bluetooth. I planned on learning the commands as well. I guess I'll have to get the Nyko remote when I get a PS3.

Is there any word on the rumored price drop? Or was it just a rumor?

As of now it seems like it was just a rumor about the price drop and the real deal will be the 80GB will be a 120GB with a Dual Shock 3 controller for $499.99. No price drop. Sorry guys, however, still no word on the white 40GB so there is still some hope for a price drop for the 40GB models.

Re: Official PS3 Discussion Part III...

the 120 gig model is a pretty pointless upgrade for consumers, given that you can upgrade the HDD. All this does is let Sony keep a ps3 model at $499. That's a price where they probably make more money, since there's not much of a big difference between the manufacturing price of the 40 and 80 gig models. They bundle in a game or larger HDD to justify the price difference.

MS hasn't make a large price drop for the 360 yet, due to their lead and slow starting ps3. I'd imagine 2008 is the year we could see them make that big 360 price cut. if Sony is still selling a model for $499 well into 2008, it'll just put them back in the same price perception situation they were in at $599 for launch.

They need to get some version of the ps3 down to $299. Is it really that hard to drop the PS2 price down to $99, 40GB PS3 to $299, and keep the 80GB w/BC & a better bundled game for $449? They'll make money off of bluray sales and just benefit overall from chipping away at the 360 market share.

I got a question for you guys who watch Blu-Ray movies on your PS3. Do you still see the black horizontal bars when watching a movie even when your TV is 16:9?

yeah. Not all movies are filmed in the same aspect ratio, so some movies still have bars at the top and bottom, some won't.

You can check the back of the box. If it's 1:78 or 1:85, it'll take up the entire screen. If it's 2.3 or 2.4, it'll have the black bars.
