PS3 Beeping, what is it?

Whenever I shut down my PS3, it beeps 3 times before it goes off. I looked on Sony's site and couldn't find anything about it. Does anyone know what the problem is? It just started doing this today.

I think it means that the system was in the middle of a process (ie. saving to the hard drive) when the system was shut down.

Also, do you shut off from the controller or do you press the power button?

the controller. I don't know what it could be in the middle of since I was just sitting in a menu. It did it twice to me today.

I know if you shut down by the power button you will get the beeps but if you shutdown by the controller the ps3 will shut down when it is done. I would give Sony a quick call for peace of mind.

I'll try that on Monday. I would imagine it would be a lot of fun to call them on Sunday.

I shut my down by the remote, I quite all my games from the controller and shut down from the dashboard...I have never heard those beeps.

I don't know what it was, but I got it to stop by turning of the the console completely using the switch on the back. I then turned it on using the button on the console and turned it off using the controller and it didn't beep anymore. I am guessing it was some kind of hard drive error.

well these things are closer to computers than an NES. Turning off your pc immediately isn't smart either, so I've always shut down my ps3 through the controller, and it does seem to take a few seconds to do it. I even quit my 360 games by going back to the dashboard.

So did I. Well except for the few times I got ticked at the game and turned it off right there and left.

As far as the beeping I've never heard it before except when I was turning it off and it was taking a while and I pressed it again and beeped three times. I assume it means its doing some kind of task and its saying your impatience self has to wait. I may be wrong though.

Seriously, the only time that I have heard it when I turned the game off using the power button and not quitting the game and going back to the XMB screen first.

The only times mine has done that is when it froze on me. I hold the power button down to turn it off and it beeps me, then powers down. It's only happened a few times, and I think the fact that it actually does shut down eventually without having to hit the power switch is a good thing.

as mentioned earlier, the 3 beeps will only happen when you're trying to shut down your system and it is currently writing to the HDD. It's to tell you that it is still currently busy... that way you don't just say "eff it, I'll switch it off on the back" which would be a huge no-no.
