Apart from Mario, Zelda and Final Fantasy made the SNES my gaming system of choice. That war was huge with all the exclusives.

Now by not owning a PS3, the only things that I'm rally missing so far is Drakes fortune & the SHow. The Genesis & SNES each had 20+ really good games that were exclusives. But once the genesis turned to gimmicks it was over. What was that crazy Sega CD game wwith Dana Plato from different strokes starring in it? She was trapped in a house and people were trying to break in. That game was horrible, yet addicting at the same time.

well the sega cd and 32x were bastard leeches on the genesis, so they don't really count in that console war. I like that angry videogame nerd video reviews of those though. Showing how all three (genesis, cd, and 32x) needed their own power brick plugged into the wall. The 32x also still needed AV wires to connect to the genesis, making it a rat's nest of cords. Horrible.

And also we only had magazines and word of mouth about how games were before we bought them, oh and also a lot of them were arcade favorites. Anyone remembers Run n Gun?

Hell, I wrote a 50 page thesis paper on the transition between the Genesis / SNES generation and the Playstation / Saturn / N64 generation. This was when Next Generation magazine was made out of high quality paper and was nearly 100 pages thick each issue! Ahhh, those were the days.

I'm pretty sure that the Genesis "won" because it was still ahead in sales when Sega dropped the Saturn, which officially "ended" that generation. SNES blew past it big time afterwards with the power of Donkey Kong even while the original Playstation was surprising people and the Saturn was already waist-deep in the grave.


PS3 / 360 war can't even come close to the fire that was Genesis / SNES. And neither the PS3 nore the 360 are consoles that can even come close to touching the quality of the Genesis / SNES when you compare each set with their contemporary standards. Both the Genesis and the SNES belong in the console HOF (we'll try to forget about the 32X add on).

SNES v SEGA ....no question. The fight had a plumber pitted against a hedgehog. And as was said, there wasn't any of this online, DLC stuff, we play games but also play DVD's and other such stuff. It was completely about the games and how they played.

And the fact that people STILL debate which system was better TODAY!

Maybe 15 years ahead from now, we might say PS3/360 was a bigger fight, but I think the ramifications of the fights are totally different. This fight was also about the entertainment business as a whole in regards to format. Then again, you can never tell if someone will come up with an even better format in the near future and kick blu-ray in the junk...

I agree completely. Back in the days when you bought a system, and the product actually performed. No rings of death, or overheating problems.

SNES vs. Genesis... easily.

Way too many multi-platform games today... there were so many exclusives happening in the 16 bit era that it was just an all out assault!

SNES had all the 1st party games, Squaresoft, SF2 first (Sega got SF2:CE later!), MK2 first (while Sega got MK1 with full gore intact).

Genesis had all those sports games play slightly better on them... Joe Montana Sports Talk football (love that game) with some cool 1st party exclusives.

SNES had a better selection of exclusives though. Final Fantasy, Mario, Zelda, NCAA Basketball, SF2, DK... the list can just go on and on...
