    Wireless Router - Need Help!

I just bought a PS3 today. Hooked it up and working fine. I also bought a wirelss router. I followed the instructions exactly. I went to play a game online and it said an ethernet cable is not connected.

I went back to the computer to see what the problem is and I couldn't even get on the internet period. I've had to disconnect the router now just to be able to go online.

I don't no anything about this kinda stuff so could anyone lend me a hand as to what I might be doing wrong?

    Thanks!

so the internet on your computer is not working ? Just trying to understand. One thing you can do is restart your network. Unplug the modem first and plug it back in. Wait about a minute and then do the same for the router.

Re: Wireless Router - Need Help!

I've got the internet working now. It doesn't seem quite as fast with the wireless router hooked up.

My problem now is I can't hook my PS3 up to the internet. I've never done this stuff before. So when I follow the manual word for word and it doesn't work it's very frustrating because I have no idea what to try next.

Here's what I've got so far:

I went to Network Settings. I selected wireless, it scanned for the WLAN and found mine, I put in the SSID and my password.

Then it gets to the IP address setting

Do I click on Automatic, Manual or PPPoE? I clicked on manual but how do I know what to put for:

      IP Address?
      Subnet Mask?
      Default Router?
      Primary DNS?
      Secondary DNS?

      MTU
      Automatic or Manual?

      Proxy Server
      Do Not Use or Use?

      UPnP
      Enable or Disable?

None of those terms mean anything to me.

Re: Wireless Router - Need Help!

I tried it on automatic and then it tried a test connection. it failed after about a couple of minutes.

I've been searching google to see if I can find an answer to my problem. I've seen several postings saying that maybe the PS3 can't pick it up because I have a password on my router. If I take it off won't my router be free for anyone to "steal" from?

you shouldn't have to turn off the password. WHen it scanned you said you put in the SSID and password correct? Double check to make sure those are right . Look for something in the PS3 menus that says "media server" There should be an option that says something like "scan for media server". Turn that OFF. Then retry auto connecting.

Re: Wireless Router - Need Help!

I had the same problem with slow connections. Definately disable media server on the PS3 that will solve any failures DL from the PS3.

I'm assuming this is a G router. Your internet on the PC should not be slowed at all by hooking this up as it runs at a speed (about 54MBPS) much higher than your cable modem speed of 6 or 7 MBPS so hooking up your PC thru the router should have 0 effect on internert speed for the PC and PS3.

I have a Linksys G router and the installation disk that comes with it is flawed and it may be the same with other brands so you do what you do with anything that gives you problems. Contact the help line of the manufacturer. Saves you alot of headaches.

With Linksys they have a website they refer you to that reinstalls your router and thru that process it works fine. It also gives you the IP address that I had to manually input into the PS3 and have had no problems since. Depending where your PS3 is located you should get about 85% to 100% connection that you can check on the PS3 network setting.
