    Wii Thoughts After 16+ Months

To those of you that have a Wii, how long have you had it, how much do you play it, was it worth it, and do you think it can keep up its run?

As for me, I got mine in January of 2007 and have enjoyed it as a second console to my XBox and then my 360. I don't know if I could have it as my ONLY console. My wife isn't the biggest gamer, but Nintendo knows her. She plays her DS frequently (actually, it was mine, but she kept playing it that she bought me my own). On the 360, she only plays Arcade titles (Luxor, Zuma, etc.), but enjoys them.

This Wii is our family machine. If I want to do traditional "serious" gaming (sports, FPS), I use the 360. But literally, for everything else, I game on the Wii. My parents and in-laws come in and they will play the Wii with us. My dad last gamed with me 20 years ago with the NES and Super Mario 1 and Tecmo Bowl...that's the last time. Now, we've played Wii Sports, Wario Ware, Guitar Hero, and Pinball. My father-in-law has bowled with us, raced in Excite Truck, and tried some Guitar Hero.

I think I've finally hit that point in my life where I don't have the constant urge to game, or if I still do, not for the extended stretches I once did. Now, I enjoy 30-60 minute stretches. I find myself playing more Pac-Man than R6:Vegas. I just enjoy the pick-up-and-play fun.

Am I alone? Am I nuts? For a base of $250 + accessories, I've been more than happy (and my wife doesn't completely want to disown me....yet). I know you still can't find them in stores, but I'm really interested to see what is possible when 3rd parties actually CARE to make something original instead of a crappy PSP or PS2 port, or integrate the DS more into it. Heck, I'll be interested to see what the Wii2 brings!

    Thoughts?

(Please stay away from fanboy-esque comments like "The Wii sucks!" or "You can't be taken seriously if you play a Wii."

I'm interested to hear from those who own, or have owned, one.

I'm primarily a sports gamer, and the Wii is my only console. It's great, seriously. With Wii Sports, Pro Evolution Soccer 2008, Super Smash Bros. Brawl (sports-ish, action), We Ski, We Love Golf, NCAA Football 09, and more, it more than satisfies my sports gaming needs. Truly an incredible system and still gets played every day.

I have to be honest, I don't think I've turned it on in months.

I havent played it forever. I liked it for the first few weeks, then got tired of always getting up and having to move. I work 9 hours a day, have a kid and family, the last thing I want to do is work hard at my video games. Its going on ebay this week as I just got a ps3.

Re: Wii Thoughts After 16+ Months

I haven't turned mine on since about the first week of January to play Mario. There's just no games that interest me at all and I'd sell it if I wasn't so lazy. Had it since June '07 and after I got stuck in Zelda and beat RE:4 I just played gamecube games on it until Metroid then didn't touch the system again until Mario. Just not the system for me and it was a poor decision to buy it but I really wanted a new system but it would have taken me to long to save for 360 or PS3. Now I have a new job and a 360 and PS3 and am fully on the PS3 bandwagon and would sell my 360 if it wasn't for COD4 on Live, I can think of one person I know who has a PS3, everyone else is 360. I really don't have people over to play games, I either play single player or online with my friends which are basically the worst games to play on Wii.

It was fun for a while but the novelty wore off and I just had no desire to play it after about 2 months. I really should just sell it on craigslist, hopefully I'll get around to it fairly soon. There isn't one game coming out in the future that interests me and the only game I haven't played that I want to is Batallion Wars 2 which I loved on gamecube but I refuse to pay 50 dollars for the same game with boats. Once the price drops I'll probably grab it and then hopefully finally sell the Wii.

I've played it lately for SSBB, and No More Heroes before that (that game got boring fast), but in general the Wii is greatly suffering from the same problem of Nintendo's past systems. It's got stellar first party games and crap for 3rd party support. It's great for holidays when I do stuff with the family, but i don't really game with friends at my place, so it's not used as much for that. No way I could have it as my main console, I need a PS3 or 360 for that

Re: Wii Thoughts After 16+ Months

3rd Party support for the Wii is turning out to be worse than the Gamecube. I don't see the Wii getting a game like the quality of RE4 for the GC.

Nintendo continues to make strong first party titles but the system is full of shovelware from 3rd parties.

I owned the Gamecube but I have no interest in the Wii. I like HD graphics, 5.1 surround sound, easy online play, etc.... and the Wii doesn't provide any of this.

While they have gained a lot of casual fans, I feel like they are losing casual-core/hardcore gamers.

Looking at the sales charts, Wii owners are mainly sticking with Nintendo made games. When the Wii was announced, Iwata went on and on about how much cheaper it was to develop games for the Wii but it's obvious 3rd Parties don't care. You don't see many AAA 3rd Party titles for the Wii while the 360/PS3 continues to get big budget games like COd4/R6V2/AC/etc..........

I think the Wii is/was awful.

I bought one on craigslist...enjoyed the novelty for a few hours...and then through the months only found myself playing a few VC games. After it sat for a couple months without being turned on, I sold it.

It was just too difficult to go to it when you have the 360/PS3.

Re: Wii Thoughts After 16+ Months

I just don't play video games much anymore in general, though when I do, I usually play Wii sports, Mario Party and Super Smash Brothers with my daughter. I also play Guitar Hero on the PS2 and play Elite Beat agents on the DS a lot. Almost everything else is collecting dust. Too many other things to do like learning guitar. Sometimes I kick myself for buying games. I have about 15 games for the PS2 that I bought for about $5-$10 each and I never play them. I just got them because they were some of my favorites when I use to play a lot. I buy Wii games every once in a while (like others have said, only the 1st party games catch my attention), but I probably don't get my money's worth. I've pretty much decided to stop buying games. I think my age (38) is finally starting to catch up with me. LOL

Re: Wii Thoughts After 16+ Months

The Wii is the local multiplayer console of choice in my house. I still have two sealed wireless controllers for my 360 because whenever three or more people come over, all we play is the Wii (in particular Wii Sports).

Even though i've got 18 games (+11 N64 games on VC), i keep going back to Wii Sports for my solo Wii gaming...i'm addicted to the Golf game on it atm whereas before i only played Tennis. I also love using the Internet browser on the Wii, when our home's only PC is occupado.

As for the games, the one game i've really enjoyed apart from Wii Sports is Super Mario Galaxy. I played that non-stop for two weeks and finished it...no other Wii game has really keep me occupied for that long (i stopped playing Zelda after 15 hours, and while both Corruption and Zack & Wiki are fun games, i've been more keen to play 360 games instead of those). Part of that problem is that lately being back at uni means i can't really sit down to play the story-based games so i just resort to games that can be played in short bursts. Hopefully PES 2008 and Mario Kart Wii will pull me away from Wii Sports once they are out here, but i have no regrets on buying so many games and i have no intentions of getting rid of any yet, even though most my solo gaming is on the 360.

My biggest gripe with the Wii is that PAL gamers get screwed by the lateness releases more often than not...we only just got Zack & Wiki and BWii in Feb 08, and we still don't have an official release date for Smash Bros Brawl. The other gripe is the slow rate that N64 games get released at on the Virtual Console.
