hooking up a home theatre system

I have a Toshiba (new) 42 inch LCD and a new Sony Home Theatre System.

The instructions say that you need a doctorate to understand them (just kidding, but geez louise). I cannot figure out how to hook it up to my PS3. Seems there is a missing connection on the back of either the home theatre system or the PS3 as I need one to go through one to the other and then to the t.v., right, an in/out type of hook up.

I'm going to sit down with the instructions again now that every hair has been pulled from my head and every tooth yanked out and try to decipher them again.

If anyone can give me some simple hints (with big pictures, lol) I'd be most appreciative.

Need a little more info, what type of cables are you using/attempting to use?

For example. I run my PS3 to my tv through HDMI, and then the sound to my receiver from the TV using an optical cable.

Yeah, it depends on whether or not your reciever has HDMI pass through or not...mine doesn't, so I have HDMI to the TV from the PS3, and optical from the PS3 to the sound system for the surround sound. Kinda tough to figure out depending on what inputs/outputs the sound system has.

Re: hooking up a home theatre system

As already mentioned, gonna depend on if your HTIB has a HDMI receiver. If yes, then HDMI cable (#1) goes from tv to HDMI output on receiver. HDMI cable (#2) will go from PS3 to a HDMI input on the receiver. Set your PS3 HDMI audio output settings to Linear PCM and you should be all set.

If it's not a HDMI receiver. You'll still need 1 HDMI cable to run from TV to PS3 for best PQ. And you'll need 1 optical cable to run from PS3 to receiver for digital surround sound. Set your PS3 Audio output for Optical Digital to L PCM as well.

Think that's it. The PS3 can't bitstream the hidef audio but can decode and output them via LPCM. Good luck.

All of this is under the PS3 settings--> BD/DVD audio settings...should be the very last 2 options as you scroll down the list.

Okay, this I’m doing. When I turn my t.v. on I have to go to INPUT on my remote and select game to see the PS3 when I turn it on.

I bought an optical cable (funny looking thing) and have plugged it from the back of my home theatre to the back of the PS3. I have an HDMI from the PS3 to the back of my t.v. (as above)

Turned my home theatre on while the PS3 is on. Sound is coming from my t.v. Went through the different functions with the home theatre and nothing effects sound coming out from the PS3.

My sound options in my t.v. are….

Audio set up: PC Audio NO
            HDM1 Audio: Auto
            Optical Output Format: Dolby Digital

Check….cable from TV to PS3, optical from PS3 to home theatre. Went to settings and changed BD/DVD AUDIO OUTPUT FORMAT HDMI to LINEAR PCM ….
Changed BD AUDIO OUTPUT FORMAT (optical digital) to LINEAR PCM

The functions on my home theatre are….AUDIO/DVD/TUNER AM/TUNER FM/TV-VIDEO/IMPORT (yes, volume is up because I can hear untuned AM station when its on that particular function.

Scrolled through all those and still just sound coming from t.v. speakers, nothing from home theater speakers.

I know its going to be something stupid, but I cant figure it out.

Re: hooking up a home theatre system

O.K.,we've established that the receiver is not HDMI,but the TV is.You are currently running HDMI from PS3 to TV and optical from PS3 to receiver.
Does your TV have a digital audio out;i.e. optical or HDMI? One of your audio options on the TV seems to be for Dolby Digital. You could run the optical cable from the TV to the receiver and skip the optical out on the PS3.(The HDMI from the PS3 will carry audio to the TV.)Any audio input to the TV would go to the receiver, which should have at least one optical in.
If you have more than one HDMI in on the TV,you can run cable/satellite to the TV as well, and the optical out from the TV would carry the audio to your receiver. In general,in hook-ups,the simplest path is usually the best.

Okay, running the optic from the t.v. to the home theatre did the trick.

Same setup as me then (PS3 to the TV to the HT).

                  Enjoy!

Re: hooking up a home theatre system

Hey all - I could use some help/advice. I just hooked up a surround system (Bose V30) and I'm wondering how I get the PS3 to do Dolby 5.1. I currently have it set up as HDMI from the PS3 to the Bose, then HDMI from the Bose to the TV. I was playing the Batman Begins BD, and it kept forcing it to PCM 2.0. I didn't do too much investigating, as I'm getting tired so I figured I'd ask here to see if anyone could help. Also, I'm not a big audio person, but I think something isn't quite right.

Do I need to change the PS3 audio settings to Bitstream instead of Linear PCM?

                    Thanks for the help!

Changing the output on the PS3 to bitstream did it. I'm not getting 5.1....
