    PS3 480/720/1080i ?????? Which one????

I have never really got a true answer. Which setting is best for PS3 games? I play The Show, GTA4, COD4, MGS4, RBSV2. I have been playing on 1080i but when I play the Show I switch settings to 720p. Should I just leave everything at 720p or what? Thanks for advice. I do not know what my Tv's Native resolution is. My TV is a JVC HD-61G787 if that helps.

720p is the best IMO for gaming. Unless you have 1080p, but not many games run at that on the PS3.

I think almost all games are designed to run at 720p. I have a 1080p set and only my Blu Rays run at that. Everything else defaults to 720. Some people force 1080p on all of their games but I've experienced frame rate issues when trying that. I would stay away from 1080i when playing games though.

Why should we stay away from 1080i?

Dont ask me, I play everything at 1080i and never have a problem with anything. Im starting to think this,"avoid 1080i" thing is a myth that has somehow picked up steam and now everyone believes it. I know the differences between progressive and interlaced and how progressive is supposed to be better for fast moving objects but this isnt an LCD that I have so its not like I need to worry about "ghosting" or anything similar. IMO, I dont see much of a difference between 720p or 1080i with anything, games or movies, but maybe I just dont have the eye for it that some do.

I have a 1080p set and have all the resolutions checked off so the games can be played in whatever resolution they were intended to play at (I manually put Uncharted in 1080 and didn't like it at all.. a whole lot of blur compared to 720p)... I haven't had a game (or played one for that matter) that played in 1080i automatically... everything is either 1080p or 720p for me.

Very little games run at 1080p without messing with the settings everytime.

MGS, SCEA's NBA series and GTP are three I could think off.

NBA 2K8 and CH 2K8 run and look better in 1080p on the PS3 but if you have 720p checked, it will go straight to 720p instead of 1080p even though 1080p is supported by the game and looks better. Same goes for COD 4.

Sony PR touted all this 1080p power back in the day and where is it now.

I see... well maybe I'm wrong.. but when I tried Uncharted at 1080p, it was too blurry for my liking when it came to the camera moving around.. MGS4 looks great in 1080p though

I would love to only have "1080p" checked off but... it just doesn't seem to work like that since games that are in only 720p always scale down to 480p rather than up.. which ticks me off so I just leave everything checked off and let the PS3 choose the HD signal it thinks it should play at lol

and @ Sony PR.. I stopped listening to them after awhile... I let the games speak for themselves

I don't know why you would... I was only talking to the author of this thread who has a 720p naitive tv. I have two hd tv's, one being a 1080p, and the other a naitive 720p. Most of my games take framerate hits when I force 1080p or 1080i, so I recomended the author use 720p. Plus, as far as I know most games are designed to run a 720p. Though if you can use other resolutions with out any problems more power to ya.

Bingo! It's best that games are run in it's native resolution... that's the number one priority.

Going away (or higher than) the native res would cause some games to run below its potential... This always happened in PC gaming... the further you increase the detail and resolution in a game's settings, the slower the framerate gets.

The same thing happens for console games, unfortunately. For example, MLB The Show's native resolution listed on the box is at 720p. Upping it to 1080i, or increasing the resolution, forces the PS3 to "do more work" in getting an optimal image onto a higher resolution. The result? A slower framerate. You can see the framerate hit whenever throwing someone out from third to first, scrolling overlays, etc.

So I recommend doing the native resolution of the game first. If your tv can handle higher you can go for it, but you risk the chance of the slower framerate.

One more thing. I have a Samsung HDTV using an HDMI connection. On the PS3 I have all video settings checked (480p, 720p, 1080i), most games automatically drop down to it's native resolution at 720p. I know this because if I uncheck 720p, games like MLB the Show would then run in 1080i and then exhibit the slow framerate. So if you have a TV that runs all resolutions up to 1080p, just go ahead and check them all anyway and the game/PS3 will automatically run at it's optimal setting even if it's lower than 1080. At least for an HDMI connection.

I actually don't recommend this if your TV's native resolution is 720p. I tried this off and on for a while, and I've come to realize that 720p just looks better. S.K.A.T.E. seems to want to go up to 1080i, but then it really doesn't run smooth at all and jaggies appear a lot more. It gave me some problems on DVDs as well.

I also worked with my TV settings, wondering if I wanted to do 16:9 or Just Scan. After a long time, I decided to do 16:9. I prefer the soft look over the crisp look.
