Leading up to e3, Reggie said there would be a big game at e3 to satisfy the core gamer but what is it?
He can't be talking about Wii Sports Resort or Wii Music. I can't imagine Wii owners being too happy that the Wii Motion Plus is coming out. Nintendo is basically admitting the WiiMote isn't that great and now unless you buy Wii Sports Resort, you will have to fork over more money to get a better controller. Also Wii Music is terrible. The "game" is so dumbed down that you will never incorrectly play a note.
I'm sure you are thinking hey as long as they don't dumb down Zelda and Mario games to try to cater to Soccer Moms and Grannies I'll be fine, well that's not the case.
"Frankly, some of the so-called "franchise games" are quite difficult for nongamers to play, so making accessible games for these players is key. With Zelda, we have to consider how to make it accessible for new gamers to pick up and play and enjoy just as hardcore gamers have.
Frankly I don't blame Nintendo for the direction they are going. They probably think for every hardcore gamer they lose, they will gain 2/3 more Soccer Moms. The sales for the Wii have been amazing so far. It's even more amazing when you consider it's basically a Gamecube with waggle and VC support. The system is full of shovelware and the sales are still through the roof. I was once skeptical when Nintendo was pointing out how all these non-gamers are now buying Wii's but now I have witnessed it with my own eyes and ears. There are numerous women at work who own Wii's and it's the first console they ever bought. Of course they are also the typical Wii owner, they only buy Nintendo games and only own 1 or 2 titles outside of Wii Sports.
If last e3 didn't convince you Nintendo cares very little for the hardcore games (the type of gamer that made the company very rich) than this e3 has done it.
With the success of the Wii, I wouldn't even be stunned if Wii 2 still didn't support HD graphics or 5.1 sound and just added a harddrive with a little bump in horsepower and a better online plan.
I grew up playing the NES as a teenager and I'm saddened with the direction Nintendo is going. I guess the Wii is not for Mii.
