Original Xbox emitting smoke

I have an old Xbox that has been running fine for about 6 years. I don't play it any more than average, and I have no electrical issues that I am aware of. Today I was only 15 minutes into an NCAA Football game and smoke started coming out. I took the game out, unplugged everything and let it cool down. The disc was not warm at all, but the whole room smelled really bad.

After a few hours I gave it another shot, but it only took 2 seconds for the smoke to come this time. Is my Xbox dead? I was hoping to hold off a little longer before upgrading to a 360, but if I have to pay to fix this one, I might as well. I've searched online, but haven't seen much about this problem. I know Microsoft offered a power cable replacement, but that was years ago, and I doubt that offer is still good. Anyone else run into this before?

Um, I don't know if the deal is still going, but I wouldn't use that xbox anymore...it could burn your house down.

There's tons of stuff on this problem over the internet. MS offered a cord replacement program for 14 million xboxes, which has a circuit breaker on the cord. It's actually a problem with the power supply though, but they didn't want to do a full recall. Hmm, sounds familiar.

Even if you had the new cord, your xbox can still short out, as it sounds like it has for you. However, the new cord limits the damage to just the xbox, instead of possibly your whole house.

If you were planning on getting a 360 eventually, there isn't any better time than now... you can get a system with a hard drive and a few games to start you off for $200.

I replaced my own power supply for my old xbox. Found one online for around $10. Just be careful if you go that route because there are different power supplies for different models of the xbox. It's a super easy fix though if you can understand how a screw driver works.

Well I called tech support, and it took a half hour, but they are calling my case a "high priority concern." I am sending the console into them for inspection at no cost to me. They will then determine if it fixable and/or replacable, so we'll see what comes out of it.
