    PS3 Jaggies?

I just hooked my PS3 up to my Samsung 46'' 1080p LN46A550, and I'm playing on 1080p through HDMI.

EVERY game has jaggies, and I know it shouldn't look like this. Should I be playing on a lower resolution? Or have my display settings set to automatic?

I've played FIFA 09 and NBA 2k9 and they both look like garbage. On my 22'' monitor they look much better at 720p.

    Re: PS3 Jaggies?

2K9 doesn't use AA for the PS3 so the jaggies are standard.

FIFA however should be pretty clean, especially in 1080p.

I would say mess around with the TV settings... sharpness and so forth.

      Taking a guess here...do this:

Menu -> Picture -> Detailed Settings -> Edge Enhancement = Off

Also might want to set the PS3 settings to automatically display the native resolution.

goh, i did what you told me and there isnt much of a difference.

altimus, i know 2k9 has a ridiculous amount of jaggies, but on my monitor it's not nearly this bad. im assuming it has something to do with 1080p.

            Re: PS3 Jaggies?

from what i have seen almost all ps3 games are native 720p, so upscaling them will hurt. I find it funny that sony says 1080p because of blue ray but if you look not very many games even play in 1080i. So I would tell you to play in 720p because I think developers are not using the ps3 to its fullest potential

What mode is it set to? Using any of the entertainment options?
Must be a settings problem somewhere or the 40 and 46 are really different.

I only have the 2K9 demo but I'll try a few things. It must be on 480p. That's just ug-a-lay right there, looks like a PS1 game. Go to settings in the XMB,then display settings and make sure you've got it on either automatic if you want things in native or at least have 1080p checked off under custom if you it upscaled and only 1080p,can't change the 480p but make sure the game supports 1080p too,2K9 does. If a game doesn't you'll have to go back and check off 720p or 1080i or else it'll end up in 480p.

                Re: PS3 Jaggies?

I felt exactly like you did... games like Uncharted made me scratch my head like "why are everyone gawking over these graphics?" There were jaggies EVERYWHERE

then I headed over to the avsforums and found someone who put up their TV settings that everyone seems to consider the best and it made a WORLD of a difference for my PS3, 360, and regular TV.

Come to think of it... I have the Samsung LN40A530 and i'm using the TV settings that were made for your set... let me link u to the TV settings that made the world of a difference for me:

These setting have been posted by clicq who has used calibration equipment to get the best possible picture out of the LNAXX550. I am posting a link to his setting here so that we don't have to dig through the thread to find them. These are considered some of the best settings for this TV...

                  Re: PS3 Jaggies?

As stated above, the majority of PS3 games are 720p native and if some of them do support 1080p (like MLB the Show and Uncharted) it's been stated that 720p still has the best looks.

Thus I'd just check 720p if your TV can handle it (I assume it can since it's new).

                    Re: PS3 Jaggies?

DXZeke, I'm probably going to stick with 720p, as it looks better than 1080p/i for every game I have.

Genecyst, thanks for the help. But it says, "These settings are only for firmware 1006.1." How do I know what firmware my tv has? And how would I change it? Is it necessary?

To upgrade the firmware start searching the Samsung site. Most firmware updates are done via a USB drive...download it, plug it into the port on the TV, and usually it'll update automatically.

And yes, you should update it. I know Samsung is pretty famous for updates, and some are pretty significant.

First check the firmware version of your TV by pressing Menu, scrolling down to Setup, then in the setup menu scroll down to SW Upgrade and press "info".. it will display the firmware versions

there should be instructions that come with what you downloaded... updating my TV might be different from yours (i had to do 2 firmware updates 1007 and 1008 so it could be 1.0) it may be the same though

but all u have to do is put the files you download onto a USB drive (i used my iPod).. make sure it's in the root of the drive (outtermost directory) and double click it... an unzipper should come up, all u have to do is press "unzip".. u should now have a folder on the usb drive called T-PRLAUS... disconnect the drive from your PC and plug it into the back of your TV... hit Menu, scroll down to Setup, and in the setup menu scroll down to SW Upgrade and press the right arrow key, it's gonna scan for usb device and then upgrade.

Also make sure your PS3 settings have all the resolutions checked off that your TV supports so your TV changes resolutions to what's appropriate depending on what game you play (my TV plays MGS4 in 1080p, Uncharted in 720p, Little big Planet in 720p, Ratchet & Clank in 720p, SSFIIHD Remix in 1080p, etc)

I don't think the scaler in the PS3 is all that great, I've tried uncharted in 1080p and the screen tearing was unbearable
