Looking to upgrade my PS3 HDD

I'm sure there are threads on this, but I obviously couldn't find anything under "PS3 HDD," and didn't bring anything decent under "PlayStation 3 hard drive SATA."

I'm going for something 500 MB or more (wouldn't mind a terabyte), and it sounds as though 5400 RPM is the way to go instead of 7200 RPM. I don't know if Seagate or Western Digital would be better for something like this, or if it ever even really matters (like do some of them perform much more slowly, or ever fail or become corrupt?).

I would prefer not spending over $100.00, but looking online, it doesn't look like that will be too much of a problem anyway. So, any recommendations, impressions, and links would be great. Thanks.

Sure staying under $100 for 500MB should be no problem.

If your talking about upgrading the internal hard drive, then you need a laptop 2.5" drive, which I believe only goes up to 500 GB at the moment. That will cost you over a hundred dollars. You have two options, Sata 1.5 and Sata 3.0. 3.0 is faster.

Gotcha, guess I was confusing myself thinking all it needed to be was a SATA internal and that they would all fit. The ones I was looking at must not have been the same thing.

You don't. It has to go on an external source like a USB drive or external hard drive. You'll have to redownload your DLC but saves ('cept for Rock Band),pics and vids can all be transfered.

Re: Looking to upgrade my PS3 HDD

Yeah, I have a 750 GB external HDD.

Which poses the question: is that just as decent? Like, as long as I have the external plugged into my PS3, can it work just as simply as an internal in my PS3? Can I run demos, music, and saved storage off of it?

                Thanks for anyone who knows.

                  From what I remember, yes.

However, if you're still interested in internal:

                  320gb for $64.99.

It does have 7200rpm, this has been tested and has been said to have minimal improvement in loading time and faster installing times. Others have commented that it would produce more heat but others have tested and said if heat was increased inside the PS3 due to the HDD, it was minimal.

I think it is a great deal and I myself personally prefer internal over external as I don't like having extra attachments plugged in.

External should play music and videos off it but I'm pretty sure it won't read the save games from it (as in to actually use them and not just transfer them),game installs, demos,DLC or music for custom soundtrack.

So you gotta start all over with Rock Band if you want to upgrade your hdd?

Yup it has some sort of save protection so it can't be copied,I forget what other games have it but I think it's like less than 10. You'll keep your trophies and probably won't have to pay for DLC again (I'm not sure what happens if it's been DLed to 5 consoles but if it hasn't don't worry about it). I have it on 360 so I'm not sure how band name type stuff works but you might need a new one of those too.

The PS3 only runs off of Sata 1.5 currently

Sony recommends only using 5400rpm drives as well... it's due to heat issues.
