    If I have a tv that only has 1080i and 480p and I buy a ps3...

Will the games run at 1080i on my tv or will they default to 480p? I remember reading issues around the time of the ps3's launch that it had problems converting signals from 720p or 1080p to 1080i and instead the system just downconverted them to 480p. I don't wanna buy it if I cant enjoy the hd experience, and I would assume such a glaring issue has been resolved as we are now two plus years removed from launch. Am I correct?

with the tv you have you wont have hd...the ps3 does not have an upscaler like the 360

most games are native 720 but the 360 upscales them to 1080p

the ps3 does not and if you try to force it then it will down scale to 480

unless the game is 1080p then you are screwed...some guys on ps3 you can upscale them but a lot are only 720

I have this exact problem and to be honest I dont see a problem with the picture quality of any of the games Ive played recently. Sony talked about releasing a patch that would allow the PS3 to upconvert or upscale a 720p game into 1080 resolution but for some reason the talk of that vanished and they havent said a thing about it since. Its all personal preference, I think more and more games are coming out with 1080i as an option anyways, its more the older games that maxed out at 720p that will cause those problems, someone will correct me if Im mistaken.

last year it was 720 and 1080p

you were able to put it at 1080i but the game was to laggy as the framerate dipped and it hurt the eyes

i dont know if this year they would make it playable without reducing the framerate for 1080p

Don't Own a HD. But is there a significant difference between 720p and 1080p?

When you start getting to larger screen sizes, yes.

I guess ignorance is bliss then because I had it set for 1080i and never experienced any lag, slowdown or choppiness and it looked just fine when playing as well. I did notice that there might have been a few more jaggies but I dont generally play a game for the look of it so it didnt effect me much at all.

I own a 50" Sony full 1080p, and qall my game play in 720p by default, because all most all PS3 games native is 720p. and I see no huge difference when I can play game in 1080p apposed to 720p, no difference.

Screen size and viewing distance plays a big part of the equation. At closer ranges you can certainly tell the difference between the 2.
The bigger the screen the further away you can be to see the difference. Each screen size has an optimal viewing distance.

No you cannot. If a game does not support 1080i then only checking the 1080i option will cause it to display in 480p.

I have this same issue. I have a 65" Projection, it supports 1080i and 480p.

Now the way I get around this is I only buy games that support 1080i.

These are the games I have on PS3.
                          DEAD SPACE
                          The Show 08
                          NBA 2k9
                          Saints Row 2
                          Socom confortation

                          All of these support 1080i.

Anything that does not run at 1080i I buy for my 360 since it has the built in convertor.

There really isn't that huge of a difference, really. Also he's talking about gaming, so I think if we could get a few pics of a game to compare it would be better, also, 95% of the PS3 games that are released are native 720p any who, only a select few are in full 1080p, if your TV has the ablity to scale, then your fine.
