Does this happen often with PS3?

I finish playing a game of MLB 09 demo, i go to quit game and then my ps3 beeps 3 times and the screen goes black. The controller doesnt respond and the power button on the front doesnt respond. The eject button does respond so I ejected Mercenaries 2 that was already in there (all while the screen is still black) and put it back in and the game comes on fine but my controller is till not responding or the power button so i power down from the back switch. I think it might be my controller that needs charging cuz i just noticed its very low, so I plug it in to charge and I then turn the ps3 back on and it goes black after a few seconds once again and beeps. I then unplugged my HDMI cable and plugged it back in and rebooted and so far so good. Does this scenario sound familiar to any of you guys? Does the ps3 overheat? It feels pretty cool compared to my 360, but I do have it on the carpet.

be careful man. my ps3 just went out all of a sudden. i have had something similiar to what u explained. and yes it can overheat.

Some game demos will do this to your system.
Sometimes games will lock up or freeze.

ALWAYS hold the power button on the front of the system. It will power it down. I've read that powering it down from the back switch on the back doesn't fix the error that happened. I've had this happen a few times. My system appears to be ok though and it's 2+yrs old.

I think my system is ok. I did a search on google and other people were reporting the exact same thing at the exact same spot with the demo. It might have something to do with trying to exit from the xmb screen. Seems like it can be buggy at times.
