Has anyone here formatted their ps3?

I am giving serious thought to formatting my ps3.
I simply can't get MLB The Show 09 to update to version 1.01 (it gets stuck on "waiting") and never installs.
The game also won't quit correctly to the XMB. It just freezes my ps3.

I am thinking the only answer is to completely format the sucker and start over.

Ok, with all that said, what steps should I take before undertaking this?

    Thanks for any help.

Back up all your data that you want to keep.

If you have a flash drive big enough, there is an option for the PS3 to do everything for you instead of doing file by file.

Also there are two reformat options, quick and long. Go with the quick as the long takes hours.

      I have a two-gig flash drive.
      I suspect a 16-gig is probably a better option.

Well the thing is the PS3 will also try to back up the install files. So first delete everything, the install files and everything else you don't want to back up. Hopefully than it should be under 2GB.

You should probably deactivate your system for the video and game stores, so it doesn't try to count twice against your limit. Once you've reformatted, you can re-activate it.

The option is in the account management menu (have to be online to see it, I think)

FWIW, this part is a known issue with the game - it's not your system. I haven't had one freeze up when I held the PS button down to get the "old" quit screen, but it happened a lot in the demo when I tried to quit with the XMB.

It's doing the same thing with other games now ... which, suffice to say, is annoying.

Just an update on this - decided to format the ps3 today.
Wasn't concerned about losing anything and I simply couldn't update MLB The Show 09 or quit to the menu properly.

Since the format, everything is now AOK.

I can quit to the XMB properly and The Show is up to date.

It's a pretty painless process. Thanks to Altimus who recommended a quick format. Good call.
