I don't feel the 360 is maxed out, but feel the PS3 has more potential as dev's get more and more familiar with using it's dev kit.

But looking at games coming out multiplatform, they look amazing on both systems, even a year out.

We've seen this every gen, the PS2 was maxed out 5-6 years ago according to many dev's, yet it went on to destroy and still sell well today.

Sony's big sticking point is the BD, and the in-house Sony games show it. They games from Sony themselves look incredible, where multiplatform games usually look better on the 360. I don't see that changing unless the PS3 gets a huge sales surge and blows past the 360. If that doesn't happen, then we're where we are at for the next few years.

No one can deny how pretty Gran Turismo 5 looked, and then Forza 3 also looked great, but it's coming on 2 discs. This worked for Gran Turismo 2 back in the day when it blew away every other racer visually, not sure how it'll work this time around.

Just babbling now, but back to my original point, neither is maxed out IMO, but PS3 has a higher ceiling, just not sure if we'll ever see it from anything else but 4-5 games a year.

These kinds of things are said all the time and truth be told, they're always using 100% of the box, it's just some are much more efficient with their code than others. Does the PS3 have more untapped potential? Sure, but the 360 has some left too, as developers will always find new ways and tricks to make the hardware sing even more.

Recently Crytek said Crysis 2 was "maxing out" the PS3.

In an interview with Gamasutra, Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli denied the Sony assertion that it would take developers years to maximize the potential of the PS3, with Hirai stating that "We don't provide the 'easy to program for' console that [developers] want, because 'easy to program for' means that anybody will be able to take advantage of pretty much what the hardware can do, so then the question is what do you do for the rest of the nine-and-a-half years?"

Talking in the wake of the announcement that EA would be publishing Crysis 2, Yerli said that "The interesting thing is we did run a performance analysis on the PS3 devkit, and you know the funny thing is the occupation on all the CPUs, the Cell and the GPUs, is pretty much – the needle is at the limit."

Here, he was implying that Crysis 2, running on the company's new CryEngine 3 would almost max out the PS3's abilities. "There’s not much more you can do," he added, "and frankly the breakthrough was very recent, and otherwise we would’ve had a compromised strategy on the consoles, which we don’t have now.

"So I think we will still have an upside, but we’re touching the hardware limits already. We do develop very very low level to get that performance out. Like I said, we started three years ago in the research of technology, and we had to dig very deep into the hardware to find the reserves, and say “oh we have 2% more here, and 1% more here,” and that allowed us actually to get to where we are."

Crytek is known for its technical excellence, and we also quizzed Yerli on his impressions of the differences between the two HD platforms. "I mean essentially the game we run is about the sam," he said. "Probably one’s stronger on the GPU side, one’s stronger on the CPU side, so depending on what you’re doing where, the PS3 does perform here sometimes better, the 360 performs other things better, but overall by the time the game ships it’ll be absolutely the same."

It almost has to, they have NASCAR in the game

But they didn't show damage in the trailer, a NASCAR was about to hit the wall when it cut. I think they are waiting awhile to unveil that.

To me this is almost like last generation where the XBOX was a beast with untapped potential and the horsepower to slap around the PS2. Due to the PS2 being out longer and the lead sku, we were getting watered down ports to the XBOX. Things are a bit different now with both systems having power that is somewhat close.

Games like Uncharted 2, inFamous, and GT5 really show what you can do with a PS3 when its on the exclusive side. I see the PS3 with the untapped potential this time when you just look at how beautiful exclusives are compared to the 360 (not that exclusives on 360 are a slouch, cause there are some that are also very nice).

Multi-platform games still suffer on the PS3 for some reason, read the review of Ghostbusters and how there are a few small things done better on the 360. Not sure if by now developers are still having issues programming on PS3 or what the deal is.

I don't think the 360 is 100% maxed out...........look at the PS2, developers were still squeezing the hell out of it even towards the end of when some big titles like GOW2 released when others said it was maxed out 2 years prior.

This won't be like Gran Turismo 2 where Disc 1 contained the Simulation career mode and Disc 2 contained Arcade Mode. Disc 2 of Forza 3 will be like an expansion where you install the contents of Disc 2 onto the hard drive giving you the cars and tracks that couldn't fit on disc 1 a la DLC. Though it doesn't bother me, it does show DVD's age.


I'm of the opinion that no system will ever fully be "maxed" out so to speak... there's always more you can do with a system... people said the 360 was maxed out with Gears 1 and since then we've seen games get better graphically (Gears 2, Lost Planet 2, Resident Evil 5, Forza 3, Alan Wake, Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, etc)


PS3, of course, has the highest ceiling to climb and reach but the 360 hasn't hit it's peak.


There'll always be different developers claiming different things such as this article claiming they hit the 360's max and other articles claiming there's more they can do (like Dan ______ from Turn10)

I believe it was on the Subaru STI. Front fender was scraped and detached from the front bumper.

I wouldn't expect them to promote the damage. Just include it.

Back to the topic though... I find it extremely interesting to see this coming from EA though. Their lead dev. platform in the 360. Why would they mention it is maxed out unless they are hitting a wall?

Also, 360 got kind of a mid-life boost a couple months ago with the new dev kits going out that have 1GB of memory. The prior dev kits had exactly the same amount of memory as a retail unit (512MB). Twice the memory will now allow developers to make the most out of all the memory, instead of having to allocate memory for testing purposes.

New Xbox 360 development kit unveiled

Microsoft has released an entirely new Xbox 360 development kit, with hardware containing twice as much memory as the original.

The additional RAM will enable developers to run videogame assets along side debugging and optimisation tools. This new kit will be available alongside the older version and is intended for triple-A game development.

"It's been a longstanding issue that as you're working on your game you can't load all of the resources that would be there when you're running, because you need to reserve some space for all of the debugging tools and those kinds of things," Microsoft's Boyd Multerer told Gamasutra.

"This is going to open up a whole new range of tools for the software portion of the XDK program."

I think it could be possible that they have tapped out the 360 for now GRAPHICALLY. The next thing these devs need to do is start to use the memory on both systems to actually show some form of intelligent AI. So far this gen, games to me across the board, seem like they have sometimes lacked sound AI.

I'd like to see a game developed with the AI and mechanics of everything as the selling point and graphics secondary. The graphics are satisfactory for me right now. It's the logic and under the hood stuff that really needs major improvement this gen of consoles IMO.

With the built in memory limitations, there is only so far they are gonna be able to push these games graphically. Now what they can do, is they can come up with cool effects to trick the eye, stuff like normal mapping and certain filters. Those (in my understanding) use less of the processing power than fully rendering textures, etc.

It seems likely to me that they added NASCAR and WRC racing modes so they could do damage. They specifically showed a rally car with damage, when a ferrari hitting the wall would have sent a more immediate message. I'd be surprised if the other regular licensed cars will have damage as well.
