Downloading to hard drive in 360

I noticed the option on my 360 to download game to hard drive.

What does this do? I assume you still need the disc to play the game, otherwise you could download the disc and return the game, right?

Does it make the game play better, load faster? Must be some purpose to it.

Games load faster (sometimes), less wear and tear on your cd and the drive.

And it also makes the 360 much more quieter.

And yes, you need to have the game in the drive to verify you have it. Then the game plays the rest of the time off the hard drive.

One question I;ve had and never found the answer too. When you go to the dashboard, the first option to play whatever is in the drive, does that play it from the HD if it is installed or is it always from the CD? I usually just navigate to the games played and then select play from HD there.

If you have turned off Auto Launch,then when you pop a game in you can hit the Y button("Game Options") to either play from disc or from the HDD.

It should play from HD by default. Test it though. Launch a game and bring up the system guide, if it is playing from the HD there will be an option to play game from disc.

Is the option to download to HD new? I'm on my third 360 and just noticed this. It does make for faster download times and less noise.

It was introduced with the NXE dash update last year.
