    July NPD

NPD: Game Industry Sales Drop 29% in July as Wii Sports Resort Dominates

    Hardware:
    • NDS - 538.9K
    • Wii - 252.5K
    • 360 - 202.9K
    • PSP - 122.8K
    • PS3 - 121.8K
    • PS2 - 108K

    Software:
    • Wii Sports Resort - 508.2K
    • 360 - NCAA Football 10 - 376.5K
    • PS3 - NCAA Football 10 - 237.4K
    • Wii Fit - 164.3K
    • Wii - Mario Kart - 156.6K
    • NDS - Mario Kart - 132.2K
    • NDS - Pokemon Platinum - 116.4K
    • 360 - Fight Night Round 4 - 116.4K
    • NDS - New Super Mario Bros. - 101.8K
    • Wii - EA Sports Active - 96.8K

The U.S. video games industry declined for the fifth consecutive month, bringing year-to-date sales to $8.16 billion, down 14% from the same time period last year.

In order for the industry to come in flat or slightly up for the total year, the back five months of the year have to come in 11% (or more) higher than the last five months of last year.

While year-to-date results are weak, there are some big titles set to be released over the next several months, including Madden this month, which should help spur sales. The worst comps should be behind us, and looking beyond August we have The Beatles: Rock Band, Halo 3: ODST, and of course, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 to look forward to.

Hardware sales have slowed considerably on nearly every platform. The Xbox 360 is the only console system showing a unit sales increase year-to-date, while the NDS has the highest sales of all hardware platforms both for the month, and year-to-date.

NCAA Football 10 was the top selling game for the month, with combined sales of 689K units across all platforms.

Wii Sports Resort was the top-selling software SKU for the month with 508K units sold with a 2.5% attach rate to the hardware install base.

Of all genres, the music/dance genre has suffered the greatest declines this year, with nearly $390 million less revenues than the same time period last year.

Summer drought on software. EA and Nintendo rule everything. New Super Mario in the top 10 is amazing for a 2006 title too.

          Yeah...Ps3 is hurtin right now...

          360 - NCAA Football 10 - 376.5K
          PS3 - NCAA Football 10 - 237.4K

Then 360 Fight Night sold something like 116,000 and Ps3 isn't listed...

PS3 is in a world of hurt right now sale wise

What is interesting is the Xbox was "only" within 50k of the Wii- probably inconsequential, but interesting. The Wii is still the darling of the young ones and will find ways to sell.

Also, all EA and Nintendo on the Top 10... what a slow month. It also looks like NCAA is down year-to-year. Makes sense because the annual games should take a hit in a down economy.

-Wow at the PSP beating out the PS3. Sony is definitely hurting, hopefully that price cut which has got to be coming soon will give them a jolt.

I will definately think about a ps3 if they drop the price soon. However I'm still undecided between the ps3 and 360...I want to decide soon because of Madden and NHL games

That's incorrect, MS has been making money off 360's for a few years now.

Yeah, from a quick Google search it looks like they were losing money per unit in 2005 and turned that around by the end of '06.

On the other, hand, of course, you have to wonder how much the RROD and related problems are costing them.

Xbox is absolutely turning a profit. It's the only thing that is in the E&D Division, and why that division had it's second profitable fiscal year in a row.

Sony is first out the gate with their PR spin.

"PS3 is just getting warmed up" and a sweet chart
