    Display settings for PS3

I have a 32"Samsung 720p televison. I bought this over a year ago and hooked up my playstation 3 with an HDMI cable and then went to display settings to set up for the highest resolution the tv could handle. I do the automatic (this in the ps3 display settings) and it always pops up that I can run at 1080p. Why does it do this instead of 720p? If the tv is only a 720p then how come it doesn't say that 720p is the highest the tv will allow?
I didn't do a very good job of explaining this, but I hope you know what I am trying to say. I have wondered about this for over a year, but didn't really ever think to much about it.
    Thanks

    Re: Display settings for PS3

are you sure it doesnt say 1080i? If it does say 1080p, no clue. I think the auto setting for the ps3 might be messed up, or maybe with samsungs. I have 2 samsungs, a 40" and 67"...ps3 says one can handle 1080p, and the other 1080i...but they are both 1080p tv's

It says 1080p. I know it is weird, but that is what is going on. No big deal, but just weird.

Likely the Samsung accepts 1080p signals and downconverts to 720p, so over the HDMI the TV is telling the PS3 that it can accept 1080p, 1080i, 720p, etc so for all the PS3 knows the TV is 1080p.

Thank you Burns ^^ That makes the most since. I was thinking maybe I got a 1080p tv for the price of a 720p. Just kidding, but that would be cool.
