Kotaku asks other publishers about re-releasing PS2 games on Blu Ray

"We touched on this in a dreamy way yesterday, but today, let’s look at it a little more seriously: Now that God Of War 1 & 2 are being re-released on Blu-Ray, can we expect other series to follow suit?

After all, there are plenty of popular PS2 games/series that—provided they were upgraded visually and included a few bonus features—people would be willing to spend money on. And not all those games/series are published by Sony. So we asked around, to see if the God of War announcement had lit a fire under any other publishers.

“We are constantly exploring unique ways to expose players to some of our legacy titles such as Metal Gear Solid and Silent Hill” a Konami representative told us. “Re-releasing games on Blu-ray presents an exciting opportunity for a publisher, however we have no announcements at this time”.

“I don’t want anyone reading this the wrong way (as I’m not saying anything like this could happen) but I’m seeing some interested for DMC to get this treatment” said Capcom’s Christian Svensson, posting on the company’s Unity forums. “Are there other titles you’d like see go this way? I’m looking for some temperature readings”.

“We’re always looking at new ways of getting content on PS3? Sony’s Patrick Seybold told us, “but as of now, [God of War] is the only one planned.”

Square Enix, sadly, refused to offer comment.

So, as you can see, no outright confirmation that similar projects are in the pipeline elsewhere (or indeed at Sony for other series), but definitely some encouraging words. You can bet somebody, somewhere is looking at the God of War collection and imagining something similar for Silent Hill, or Metal Gear Solid, or even Onimusha.

Movie fans love the Criterion Collection because it takes old movies and breathes new life into them; it’s about time video game fans were given something similar."

considering the news of God of War has completely sold me on the idea of getting a ps3, I would LOVE for this to happen. if they could do this for MGS and RE I would be set for life.

I'm looking forward to playing GOW2 on PS3...but IMO they'll have to price these titles more cheaply (don't know how much the GOW Blu-Ray will be), but full price, even for 2 old games, is a bit much considering you can probably get both for 20 or less on PS2.

mgo, they are going to charge $39 for the Blu-ray with both titles on there. It is going to be 720p upscaled, textures and jaggies are cleaned up, both running at 60 FPS, and full trophy support.

There are a few titles I'd like to see released. They are putting the Tomb Raiders on the PSN which is cool, I'd like to see that done with the Ratchet and Clank series as well. Either on the PSN or put them all on a disc, either way.

That's worth it then...My worry is that other companies would try and gouge us, but for 40 bucks I think most old game compilations would be worth it. I could see 60 if they're offering 4+ games though.

I wish that Chains of Olympus was also offered on here, that was a excellent PSP prologue to this series.

Sony was very smart to add trophy support to the God of War series. This is what MS should have done with their Xbox Originals.

It shocked me how bad MS whiffed on this. They had the ability to do this with the originals they threw on XBL to download, or at least with the previous two Halo games. People wouldn't have been whining about the $15 price if they had done this. MS somehow even stopped xbox originals support without ever putting up Halo 2.

Sony found a brilliant way to get people to willingly enjoy buying ps2 games again.

Ico and Shadow of the Collossus would be awesome!

Same for MGS, FF, Okami, Kingdom Hearts etc

Man you said it. Ico was great and I gave my PS2 to my nephew before I got a chance to play SoC. I've been wanting to play it for the last several years. Please re-release that Sony!

The same goes for GoW, I never played those either, but wanted to, so this will give me a chance to try them out.
                          PS: You guys are great.

Definitely, I'm not sure I would bother with any other compilation/re-release.
