NPD: PS3 'Big Winner,' Halo 3: ODST Dominates as September Sales Hit $1.28 Billion

    Hardware:
    • DS - 524.2K
    • PS3 - 491.8K
    • Wii - 462.8K
    • 360 - 352.6K
    • PSP - 190.4K
    • PS2 - 146K

    Software:

NPD analyst Anita Frazier commented, "The industry managed a modest increase over September 2008, and generated the second bestselling September on record after 2007 when Halo 3 released and sold over 3 million copies that month. On a unit sales basis, the industry was flat. The increase in revenues is driven by a rise in average retail prices in all categories with the exception of console hardware in which the average retail price decreased 8% from last September."
"All three console manufacturers enjoyed the impact of lower prices on unit sales as the PS3, Wii, and Xbox 360 realized an increase over August of 87%, 33%, and 31% respectively, on an average sales per week basis (keeping in mind September was a 5-week month compared to 4-weeks in August)," said Frazier. "Compared to last September, the PS3 was the big winner, more than doubling last year's sales. This portrays a very strong consumer reaction to the price decrease as August and September both realized a lift of more than 70% over the prior month. This is the first month that the PS3 has captured the top spot in console hardware sales." IndustryGamers thinks PS3 will finally remain competitive from here on out.

As good as September was for PS3, however, Xbox 360 actually drove the most growth. Frazier pointed out: "Across all categories, the Xbox 360 platform contributed the most to industry unit and dollar sales as sales of 360 hardware, software and accessories comprised 32% of the month's revenues."

On the software side, it comes as no surprise that Halo 3: ODST took first place. The game sold through 1.52 million copies. "Halo 3 certainly impacted the industry two years ago (Sep'07) when it was launched, and this year, Halo 3: ODST realized impressive sales making it the 6th best-selling SKU launch of all time. Five of the top 10 software items for the month were on the Xbox 360 platform," said Frazier.

Not as big as a difference I thought it would be for the PS3.

I know people have said this for 2 years now but it's impressive how many PS2's are being purchased. The system no longer has any big exclusives yet it continues to sell well.

hmm, good month for everybody. Harmonix maybe a little disapointed with the Beatles Sales. The ps3 version not even in the top 10 but the Wii is. Edit:

The Beatles sales do not include hardware bundles. Looks good then I guess

funny you said this...that was the first thing that jumped out to me as well. my wife and i have 4 kids (ages 10-4) and they LOVE the ps2...i like the fact that games are cheap, and they don't mind playing used games that can be purchased for next to nothing. it's a good system...

LOL! I agree with this, I also have 4 kids and my son plays the PS2 the most out of all the kids. Being able to find used games cheap plus knowing that some new releases are still coming is good.

Yeah, I was expecting close to 1 million. Oh well, I guess it was a nice victory for them for one month.........it will be interesting to see if they can continue with this momentum or not.

People expected a bump, and almost 500k isn't bad at all. Great for the relaunch of the system, and it'll really be interesting to see how it sorts out during the holidays.

Glad to see beatles rock band beat guitar hero 5, even though I felt GH5 was a solid game with a weak track list. Too bad it's barely beating them, so Activision likely made more money, what with not having to pay out the *** for the beatles license.

                              Re: September NPD

Two music heavyweights went head-to-head this September. Both The Beatles: Rock Band from MTV/Harmonix and Guitar Hero 5 from Activision were released in the same month, both with two very diverse music offerings.

So who came out on top?

The Beatles: Rock Band takes the the first round, selling a combined total of nearly 600,000 units. Guitar Hero 5, meanwhile sold just under, 500,000 units.

As you can imagine, MTV/Harmonix is excited about this news.

"We've heard countless stories about how The Beatles: Rock Band has inspired and brought friends, families and even complete strangers together," stated Scott Guthrie, EVP and President, MTV Games. "The overwhelmingly positive reaction by music fans, hardcore gamers, critics, retailers, young and old alike, has been extremely gratifying. The game was a labor of love for the teams at Apple Corps, MTV Games and Harmonix and seeing it resonate across generations the world over is truly priceless."

MTV also pointed out The Beatles: Rock Band outsold Guitar Hero 5 even with the free promotional Guitar Hero: Van Halen game and a version available on PlayStation 2.

The company also revealed the Xbox Live exclusive track "All You Need Is Love" was downloaded over 100K times.
I hope this shows to Activision that a better song selection would have helped here.
