Re: HDMI Or Component Cables For XBOX 360?

You have some 22 inches from $228 to $258, they are the Vizio, Phillips and Samsung brand. Got some 26 inches for around $298, again it is Vizio and Sanyo. They have some 31.5 inch Sanyo tvs for around $368. Got some 32 inch Elements in the upper $300 range too.

And you have lots of 19 inch tvs for under $200. Keep in mind these are the low end model LCD tvs. Me myself I would try to get a Samung or Phillips, they are more long term reliable and over all better looking picture wise compared to Vizio and Sanyo.

Just head over to Walmart or Best Buy. Preferably Best Buy because they have way more variety of brands then Walmart.

Ok, I dont know why I didnt just ask you what TV, specifically, do you recommend for me to get? lol that would have been so much easier. For some reason I feel you understand what I'm looking for. Not a big real big TV, but one that is a reasonable size for a bed room.

You mentionedVizio, Phillip, and Samsung. The HDTV we have in the house my mother just purchased in the past couple of months. Maybe late October. It's a a 40" Samsung. You said you recommend either Samsung or Phillips, I'm assuming you recommend a 22" aswell. I hope to hear input from you soon, as I'm really excited about this whole setup lol. I just got my 360, gonna be getting a good TV to play on, then I'll need to get an HDMI cable, then I'll be all set

Also whats the diff between LCD TVs, LED TVs, TV that are both LED and LCD, and Plasma. From my understanding, Plasma only comes in the bigger sizes. But when it comes to performance and how long its gonna last...what should I be looking for?

I have two Vizios in my apt, LOVE them. Ones a 32" 720p, the other is a 42" 1080p. GREAT TVs.

ok just to clarify, component cables show just as good as an HDMI cable right? even in 1080p?

Ravens - dude, i'm confused by your posts but if you ARE on an HDTV go online and order at least component cables. And if you're really on a regular TV it's not true that composite is the best you can do, there is s-video on most tvs and it is VASTLY better than composite.

And Rawdeal - IMO component and HDMI are the same, except for the fact that component is more of a hassle because of 5 cables vs. one. One thing I noticed on my HDTV though is that VGA looked better than component. So if you have that option you may want to consider the VGA connection as well.

Technically No. With component cables, a digital signal has to converted to an analog signal to go over the wire. The TV has to convert the analog signal back to a digital signal to display it. The is almost always data lose during conversions. With HDMI, the signal stays digital from source to display so there are no conversions.

In either case, there will be a conversion to the TV's native resolution if the source materials resolution does not match the TV's native resolution. For example, if the source's native resolution is 720p and your TV is native 1080p, the signal will have to be converted to 1080p to be displayed. In this case, you should have the device with the better scalar do the conversion. If that is the TV, output the signal at 720p and let the TV do the scaling. If it is the source device, set the output from the device to 1080p so the TV won't do any scaling.

Re: HDMI Or Component Cables For XBOX 360?

LED are over rated and really just a LCD tv with different way of light sourcing through the screen. And more importantly LED tvs run high in price. Even a 19 inch LED cost $269, compared to a LCD of the same size as low as $178.

For a bed room, being that LCD tvs are rectangular in shape, a least a 26 inch or preferablly a 32 inch. Dont worry 32 inch LCD is smaller then a 32 regular tv. 19 inch and 22 inch is really too small to play games on, it would be like playing on a pc monitor.

Currently Walmart has 32 inch Samsung for $438, which is really the best tv you can get for that size under $500. Phillips 32 inch would be second best, depending on the store you go to, it will be between $398 - $440.

If you want to go below $300, then the 26 inch Vizio for $298 will do. If you want to go below $250, then you have some 22 inches.

But trust me, 22 inches is SMALL on a LCD tv. Far as what to look for, I always look at the contrast ratio. The higher it is, most of the time the better the picture looks.

They do make 32 inch plasma tvs....however the only good plasma makers are LG, Panasonic and Samsung. And they are all over $700 for those brands.

No need to get caught up in the hertz of a tv. Because you only going to notice it on big tvs of 42 inches or larger anyway. Same thing with the 1080p vs 720p. Most games are native 720p anyway, so no need to get a 1080p on a tv smaller then 42 inches. It is a waste of money considering 1080p tvs cost $100 more then 720p tvs.

And since your trying to keep the price down, 720p 60hz LCD tv is good enough for your budget. And for the love of God dont ever buy an open box tv, no matter how big of a discount they give.

I know walmart is famous for 25% off on open box tvs. What they dont tell you is that tv use to hang on their tv wall for almost a year and sometimes over a year, all day, all night, constantly on. Or if it wasnt on the wall, it was a return tv that somebody bought.

I remember when I worked at Walmart we use to get a lot of return tvs, mainly the vizio brand. And we were told to just clean the tv off and tape the box back up and sell it as brand new. If we lost the box or was too torn to be retaped, then we were told to sell it as open box.

And the thing about open box that be on the sales floor is that people kids kick and waste stuff on those tvs all day everyday. Or their shopping cart will bump into it.

I'm on a standard TV...for now. I dont think my TV has an S-Video option. I thought VGA connections were primary used for PC monitors?

Standard tvs dont have a VGA input, only LCD tvs do. And in the order of looks, it goes like this.

                    1. HDMI
                    2. VGA
                    3. Component
                    4. S Video
                    5. Composite

oh really? so much of a difference is VGA to HDMI? or is it just your TV?

Well i'm not sure because I didn't directly compare VGA to HDMI...however at my last house I had both component and VGA hooked up and alternated and looked at the screen and it was clear to me that VGA was superior to component. I had read an article on some gaming site saying it was so that is why I tried it...and I definitely believe that it is but maybe, as you say, that is just my tv (which was a Samsung 60" DLP btw).

The VGA brought out a little more detail, especially in the darker areas. It also seemed to have very slight but noticeable contrast.

And yes VGA is typically for PC monitors but it's nice the Xbox supports it IMO..

thanks Odogg, i appreciate it. can anyone else chime in on VGA or COMPONENT compared to HDMI?

im getting a 360 next week (most likely a the PRO version with a 20gb hard drive from Gamestop.) and i would like to know.

see my HDTV only has 2 HDMI ports and they are both being used by my PS3 and Cable box. so instead of me having to buy a HD Switcher, i wanted to get a component cable since that would probably be cheaper.

ODogg is right. S-Video will be better than composite if you're on a regular tv.

Another thing to consider. If you are on a HDTV and using the 360 as your DVD player, you can only get upconversion through HDMI or VGA cables. Upconversion isn't available on protected content like DVDs when using component cables.

Also, since everything except HDMI and DVI is analog, the quality of your cables do matter. The Microsoft VGA cable will be better than the cheap 3rd party cables you can get on ebay. With digital signals, it's all or nothing. $3 HDMI cables will work as well as $150 cables, etc
