So 1080p upconversion, almost no chance of signal degredation, less clutter and lossless audio are not clear advantages? Righttttttttt

The lossless audio alone makes HDMI better.

      1. There is definitely a chance of signal degradation with HDMI. You can only use HDMI cable with short lengths and the quality is compromised.

      2. I was only speaking of VIDEO advantages. There really isn't a difference in terms of picture quality. Audio, convenience and protection issues is where HDMI wins. For whole house video and audio set-ups, component is far superior at this stage.

Overall, HDMI has the advantage for reasons I have stated earlier.

You act as if I was trying to get in a battle with you. I was talking about video alone.

Agreed if talking about only blu-rays or HD-DVDs. Most people still own, watch and buy standard DVDs. Those would look better if using HDMI since protected material can't be upconverted using component cables. 1080p unconverted will be better than 480p

LOL I'm not looking for a fight. We clearly have a difference of opinions if you think HDMI is merely more convenient and that component is "far superior at this stage".

Not entirely true. If your TV is native 1080p then every thing it shows is scaled (or up-converted as you put it) to 1080p. If the scaler in the TV is better then the scaler in the player, the best picture would be had by setting the player to output at the source materia'ls resolution (i.e. 480p) and allowing the TV to do the scaling.

Does HDMI make a difference if you are watching a standard dvd on your TV?

It is devices with copy protection that keep component from carrying 1080p.The cables have the necessary bandwidth.

Just to clarify the components cable 1080p issue, you WILL get 1080p for games using component cables if your tv supports it, but you will NOT get 1080p for DVDs. In fact, I remember now that before Blu-ray when I used my Xbox as a dvd player that is the primary reason I went and bought the VGA cable.

Rawdeal - all component cables have audio with them that i've ever seen. I don't think they make them with just the video. It's always 5 cables for components, 3 for video and 2 for audio.
