    360 Video Issues

I have recently been having problems with my video from games or Netflix streams getting stuck. Audio plays but picture has a freeze frame, and either stops playing video portion or graphics or freeze screen shot with the game still continuing. A third issue is the screen playing but a checkered graphic or squares plays over the picture.

Is this a sign that the 360 is going to go soon? Too hot video processor? It happens when I have the heater running in the house (77) and the 360 is upstairs playing on the plasma (which makes the room warm).

I'll take pictures if it does it again. What I've done is place a fan closer to the 360 rear exhaust but it still locked up during a netflix stream. Turning off and on the TV resets it. Not sure if it is TV or 360. 360 is hooked up component 1080p settings. I have only recently switched it to 1080p was 1080i. PS3 no issues but hooked up HDMI.

Any of this sound familiar to 360 owners? Mine is a refurbished model almost 9 months old for me.

You're dying. Mine started doing it and it RROD'ed about 12 hours later. Either your GPU is losing connection or just going out altogether. Get on the phone with MS, ASAP. Sorry.

Yeah your video GPU is dying. Won't be long now. Prepare a coffin and pour out a little liquor.

P.S. 77 degrees?? Why in the world do you keep it so hot? Are you in your 80's or something?

Got kids. 72 is too cold and 75 not really worth running a heater. 77 just right.

So it may red ring but unless it does its not covered. Will MS even do anything since this was a refurbished model? So are these "classic" symptoms? I just want to make sure it isn't the input on the TV or the plasma getting ready to go, three years old now but still low hours. First year maybe used it once a week.

It depends. Is this a MS refurbished that you got from them? Or one you bought off of EBay? MS has to cover both E74's and RROD's for 3 years, even if was already a refurb they sent you back for your original. The Ebay ones you're outta luck...

Dude, to each his own but I can tell you that running 77 degrees is too hot for some electronics, especially the Xbox 360.

              Re: 360 Video Issues

Its a refurbished one from an online retailer/reseller/wholesaler. It had an July 09 refurb date from a sticker on the back it came with a 90 day warranty.

Registering it now. When sending it in do I need to keep my hard drive or do anything else with the system? I don't have much but I do have some purchased content that I don't want to have to repurchase. Do I have to get a memory card to store my profile?

Warranty expired 12/19/09. They want $99 to repair it. I assume I should just wait for it to crap out to get the free repair. Problem is its locking up during online gameplay.

E74 error do this mean the console doesn't show a picture at all? I can play for 5 minutes to a couple hours before the picture starts freezing.

You only send the console and nothing else, no hard drive or cables should be sent. You shouldn't lose your profile or your purchased content assuming it's all on the hard drive which you are keeping.

You could always try the towel trick (do a google search on it) to see if you can get the RROD and then MS will fix it for free I believe.

Oh okay I thought they sent you a newly repaired console when they receive yours. I figured the profile is locked to that console only didn't know if I had deauthorize like Sony.

They will send you a newly repaired console when they receive yours. But your profile is not locked like on the PS3 mostly because I believe the hard drive stays in the PS3 when it goes back but on the 360 you take the hard drive off and keep it.

                        Re: 360 Video Issues

I'm resurrecting this thread since it's the only one I could find that closely deals with what my issue is. Let me describe the whole scenario.

A little over a month ago I picked up FIFA WC 2010 and BF: BC2. It was the first time I had really turned on the 360 in a month or so (I'm in grad school and didn't have time). I was playing both games from the DVD. Well, FIFA was freezing up when I played it. It would happen both quickly and when the 360 had been on for a while. BF2 was doing the same thing. The weird thing with BF2 was that the video would freeze but I could still hear the music playing and soldiers yelling stuff. I thought that maybe it was my DVD drive going bad. I picked up a 250 GB hard-drive so I could just play the games from that. I had been wanting to upgrade from my 20 GB drive for a while and this gave me an excuse. I began playing games from the hard-drive, the freezing would still happen. Obviously the DVD drive, and the hard-drive, weren't the issue. Fast-forward to a couple of weeks ago when I picked up RDR. That was playing well and I began to think it was bad copies of two EA games that were causing this. Then RDR began to freeze up at random times. With it, again, the video would freeze but I could still hear music playing. In all cases, I could hit the big X in the middle of the controller and hear the quick menu for the console pop up. If I hit any other buttons after that, like Y to go to the dash, it wouldn't go anywhere. I discovered last night that if I opened the tray while the game was frozen, I could then see the dashboard. It was like the game freezing never happened.

If you are sitting there thinking, "He has the RROD about ready to happen." Well, I took care of that problem, I thought, in July 2009 by fixing my first RROD issue using seasprite's RROD Fix thread. My console had been working great since then up until a month or so ago. Still, I do wonder if it's a ventilation issue. I do have it on the lower area of my entertainment stand but it is completely open in the back and only has a Blu-Ray player to one side of it about 6 inches away. I've tried putting the console on a piece of wood out in front of the tv so it is out on its own but it still freezes up.

So, I don't know if it is an overheating issue, my GPU is going bad, or what. I'm confused as to why the game freezes, I open the tray if too much time hasn't passed, and I'm viewing the dash again. I'm having great difficulty isolating where the problem really lies. Any thoughts?

I would research the problem and if you can't find anything I would try to get it fixed

Appreciate the response. Actually I have researched it. I haven't seen anyone come across the exact same issue, especially after already doing the RROD fix. All posts I've seen online say that it's heading for a RROD and here's how to fix it. Well, I've already experienced the RROD and fixed it last year. No problems with the system at all post-fix until a month ago. That's 10 months or so. This is an issue I never encountered even leading up to the RROD. I can't get M$ to fix it because 1) my warranty is up and 2), even if it wasn't up, I cracked open my 360 last year and cut the sticker, voiding the warranty.

Anyway, just to add to my original post, if it was a matter of not enough thermal paste being applied under the GPU, which was a worry of mine when I fixed it last year, I imagine I would have seen it being an issue a long time ago.

One other thing I forgot to add, which may be an important detail, is I've heard a vibration noise inside the console not too long after I did the RROD fix last year. It would only make the noise on start-up but would quiet as the system eventually got going. Just from the research I've done, I'm wondering if the heating of the motherboard is causing the GPU to come loose. The weird thing is, I opened my 360 last week again just to see if something was going on in there but I didn't hear the noise when I turned it on while opened up. Once I put it all back together, and tightened everything up, the vibration stopped...for a while. It has since slowly started up again. I think it gets worse with each successive powering on of the console, just like it did last year.
