Got a problem with my PS3 - Help!!!

My PS3 just started doing something weird recently where it seems unable to read whatever disk I put in (I.e. Game disk, Bluray movie, DVD, etc). I'll put a disk in and it won't show up as though it's been detected.

Any ideas?? Someone mentioned something about doing a laser reset on my PS3, is that accurate???

Any ideas or suggestions at all??

The BD laser is probably dirty, unfortunately, the only real good way to clean it, is taking apart the system. The lens could be dead as well, but more than not, it's just dirty.

When that happened to mine, it was because my drive failed and I had to send it in to Sony for repair.

Same here. Sounds like your next step will be receiving a coffin, if you choose, and giving Sony $149.

Yeah, this is officially something that happens. If you're out of warranty, cracking the sucker open and manually cleaning the lens (tedious but nothing too difficult) can give you an extra 3-6 months of use (that's what happened with mine, at least). If you're still under warranty, call Sony and tell them you're not happy, lol. And, last option, as stated, is $150 for a refurb.

I did get my original system back rather than a refurb and overall the return process wasn't too bad. I hated giving up $150 to get it fixed though.

I had the same experience. But I was reading on OS or somewhere about Visa's warranty manager, where they give you an extra year (for PS3 anyway) under warranty if purchased with a Visa card. So, my $150 was reimbursed. I had already gone out and purchased a slim to replace this unit prior to reading about this Visa service. So, now we have 3 PS3s in the house. Using two of them for mostly blu-ray purposes.

Thanks for the responses guys, looks like going the cleaning route will be best option since my PS3 is no longer under warranty.

Considering the two week hell I went through after having a broken PS3 for three months, I'd say they owe us $350 for the entire experience.

What an enduring process it was! If you can fix it yourself, I urge you to take that route. If you know how to do it right, it would take you 35 minutes tops. In your case, it may take you a few hours, especially with wanting to make sure you don't mess anything up.
