Nintendo is preparing to unleash the full force of its development and marketing artillery against Apple after profits tumbled at the Japanese giant for the first time in six years.

The reversal of fortunes, though flagged in advance by the company, throws the spotlight on threats to what once seemed a bulletproof business.

Satoru Iwata, the Nintendo president, is understood to have told his senior executives recently to regard the battle with Sony as a victory already won and to treat Apple, and its iPhone and iPad devices, as the “enemy of the future” .

LOL! Oh Nintendo, Apple will squash you like a bug. The big N is sounding like Sony during the last 2 generations of gaming............do they forget what goes around, comes around?

Imagine Apple releasing a console with iTunes capability and being able to download your games through iTunes taking out the retail aspect of purchasing the games. I'm not talking about iPhone/iPad games, but games from publishers we see now on PS3/360, etc. I think that Apple can really pull this off if they wanted to as they have been successful with the music industry.

The Wii's sold a ton. It's surpassed the sales of the original NES apparently.

But apple's a computer company. Nintendo can only wish they could do what apple can.

I don't really think this article means that Nintendo is going to actually go after Apple products. They aren't going to throw out a iphone competitive device, it's so far outside their company culture for it to even be a possibility.

However, they may be concerned with the growth of Apple products. The DS sold incredibly well during its run, but the iphone came along and grabbed the touchscreen attention. Nintendo will want to push hard to make the unique experience of the 3DS another hit for them.

With how slowly AppleTV has sold, I don't see it happening anytime soon. Apple seems to enjoy making a big splash when doing something, and they haven't even proved themselves to be serious in computer gaming.

I do see them slowly embracing game developers with how well their portables have sold solely for game usage. I read they weren't happy the iPod touch was being used so heavily for games initially but have since embraced it.

With their upcoming online XBL-style service for iPhones/iPods, including video chats and gamerscores... I don't think you can rule out them actively focusing on taking a chunk out of the portable gaming market. If that works well for them, they might consider a home console. But again, I don't see it happening soon though; two hardware generations from now at the earliest, if at all. All of their moves/acquisitions recently have them focusing on a possible battle with Google.
