    Optimizing PS3 for 1080p output?

I just purchased a 160GB PS3 Slim console and I was wondering what are the best/optimized settings for a 1080p LCD HDTV via HDMI connection.

Should I un-check the 720p screen resolution option (leave only 1080p checked) or is it best to have BOTH checked?

Any other tips and suggestions would be much appreciated.

    Thanks.

Both will cover your bases,so games like the Show, which is optimized for 720p,will automatically output at that resolution.

I just picked up Madden 11 and the display output on the back cover states 1080i max.....but my PS3 outputs it @ 720p.

This is with the AUTO checked in display settings and I have a 1080p LCD HDTV.

WHY does the PS3 display the game @ 720 instead of the recommended 1080i? Shouldn't it "automatically" set it at the highest display that is set by the game?

Does this happen with anyone else and is there a way to correct this?

        Thanks.

Most games are optimized to run at 720p (native resolution), not 1080i or 1080p. To force your game to play in the 1080's you need to deselect any other resolution options.

Your game is also not likely to look any different as the game is going to render the game at a set resolution, scale it to the output resolution then your TV will scale that to it's set pixel resolution. Ultimately the reason the PS3 defaults to 720p is because it's better not to interlace the image and have your TV deinterlace it later, not only can all this processing degrade image quality, it can also increase the display lag of the TV.

Like the rest of the guys have said, leave it on auto or keep 1080p and 720p checked.

The Show for instance will run at 1080p/i, but it takes a hit to the frame rate where as 720p it runs great since it was optimized for it.

I leave my system on 720p & 1080 since it covers both bases. Games default to 720p (which every PS3 game is native to 720p and only a handful are able to play in 1080 without issues) and all the Blu Ray movies pop on at 1080.

Yup this is how I have mine setup also. Image quality will suffer some by forcing a 1080 image for a game. But I honestly see little degrading at all. Now this could change depending on the TV you have. I own only Samsungs through out my house so I make a point to own a great TV. Less TV's such as Elements or something in that realm might see a worst image with the interlacing going on.

Even with everything I said, I let my PS3 run games at their designed settings (Mainly 720p). Only my 360 do I force 1080i for all games. But like I said, I see little degrading going on.
