dvd for games?
I have spoken about disc space being a problem on the 360 . some have said that DVD is fine for games this gen . but now that Microsoft said there will be no new xbox for 5 years is DVD still good .http://www.conceivablytech.com/3034/...needs-blu-ray/Last edited by Napstar22; 09-24-2010, 06:39 PM.DallasCowboys 4 LifeTags: None -
Re: dvd for games?
Honestly yes dvds are still good for games. Have you ever installed a 360 game to your HDD ? It don't even use 9gb, which is the size of a dvd. I have dozens of games installed on to my HDD.
Mafia 2 - 6.5gb and the highest
Madden 11 - 5.5gb
NBA 2K10 - 6gb
Alpha Protocal - 6gb
Batman - 5.2gb
Red Dead Redemption - 6gb
UFC 2009 - 6gb
UFC 2010 - 6g
Mass Effect 2 - 6gb
Mass Effect - 5gb
Bad Company 2 - 6gb
Modernwarfare 2 - 5.6
They not even close to maxing out disc space. Majority of the games use 6gb of space, with half of them using 5 1/2 gb. -
Re: dvd for games?
Exactly. Most games don't even approach using the size of a dual layered DVD. This is an even more glaring issue for dual console blu-rays on PS3, as you're barely eclipsing 1/5th of the capacity of a BD25.
I'm sure the next generation will make more of a push towards more anti-pirating download only type gaming.NFL: Green Bay Packers
MLB: Pittsburgh Pirates, Colorado Rockies
NBA: Denver Nuggets
NHL: Colorado Avalanche, Pittsburgh Penguins
NCAA: Air Force Falcons, Penn State Nittany LionsComment

What about games like mass effect 2 is that on 1 or 2 disc ? And will sports games need more space?Honestly yes dvds are still good for games. Have you ever installed a 360 game to your HDD ? It don't even use 9gb, which is the size of a dvd. I have dozens of games installed on to my HDD.

Re: dvd for games?
With the new HDD sizes, it really doesn't seem like multi-disk releases would be all that bad. If games in this generation start consistently demanding more space(which probably won't happen), it really wouldn't pose that big of an issue for 360 gamers.
That being said, I really doubt that Sony was even thinking about game size or disk capacity when they decided to go with blu-ray. It almost seems like the article you posted is implying that Sony some how came out the loser by deciding to push blu-ray with the PS3... wait was this article written in 2007 or 2010?
Sony was clearly trying to establish blu-ray as the new medium format for movies, and even if they seriously hurt the profitability of the PS3, they still won the war. Microsoft was never serious about releasing a blu-ray 360 anyways, so I fail to see how news of them deciding to pass it by for this generation has any effect on Sony, or the even the blu-ray format as a whole. Now, more than everComment

Your correct but you have to remember that not all 360 users have a hard drive. With the new HDD sizes, it really doesn't seem like multi-disk releases would be all that bad. Re: dvd for games?
Yeah, but I'm sure they could set it up in a way that allows users with out hard drives to play with minimal disc swapping. And even in the rare case that they couldn't, I'm sure Microsoft wouldn't lose much sleep over forcing a very small percentage of their users to buy hard drives for an even smaller percentage of games.
I think in a worse case scenario, you may see some small things being left out of games for the 360(probably still available for free download), but I really doubt developers will force the issue until next-gen.Last edited by Jgainsey; 09-26-2010, 10:17 AM.Now, more than everComment

Re: dvd for games?
The number of games that are multiple discs are 1% and they all are role playing games. And their disc space consists more of data content then graphics. Truth of the matter is they could have compressed all that data content and kept everything on one disc if they really wanted to. However putting your game on multiple discs gives the illusion that your game is longer then it really is.
Sports games will never need blu-ray discs because the data a sports game needs to run is relatively very small compared to an action game and even smaller compared to a role playing game.
Graphics part of game really don't take up as much of disc space as people think it does. More then half of a game size consist of data AI, dialouge. The other big user of disc space is audio.
How a game looks graphically is a hardware issue, not a software issue.
DVD and Blu-ray is nothing more then a delivery tool.Comment
