yeah I want it too, but at a price drop. The only problem is I have plans to go to Italy in April, and it sure would be nice to have this thing on the 15 hour plane ride.

I was just reading that one retailer in Japan dropped the price already by 20% on both models. At this point if a price drop doesn't come, pack the thing with a memory card or d/l a free psn vita game.

Sony is notoriously stingy with price drops, I wouldn't get my hopes up until the summer or even fall. Then they'll sell a ton of units and say 'look, the unit is a success!' like Nintendo did with the 3DS this week. Yen vs Dollar has been a pain point for years and they're going to get every early adopter dollar they can get at full price.

I've always been able to refrain from getting portables on release and wait for price drops. Consoles, however, have been a completely different story.

Those who pull the trigger won't be sorry. I had a blast during my time with it.

Sony: 3G PlayStation Vita not canceled in North America

Despite Amazon's claims to the contrary, Sony reps tell Joystiq that, no, the 3G model of the PlayStation Vita is not canceled in the US. Try and feign surprise! An IGN report from earlier today noted that the Amazon product details for the 3G model of the Vita listed it as "discontinued by manufacturer," but when contacted, Sony's senior director of corporate communication and social media Patrick Seybold immediately refuted the claims.

He told Joystiq flat out, "This is not true," and said that Sony will be connecting with its Amazon contacts to figure out what's up. Both the 3G and non-3G versions of the PlayStation Vita launch in North America on February 22, with a 3G "First Edition" bundle preceding them both by a week.

its funny lately with all these reports about says and what not, I don't care what people write, Us Americans love gaming, and when people get this thing in there hand and see the power of it like Parade stated, there mouths will drop and there money will too to buy one, this handheld is above and beyond like nothing I have seen i handheld gaming.


The Vita will sell here, I have had it over a week now and Uncharted is amazing, I still cant believe the graphics.

People said similar things about the PSP too. I would like nothing more than to see the Vita come out and do really well, but the odds are stacked against it unless something big changes for its US launch. I think it has one of the best launch lineups for a handheld or otherwise, but it also has a high price point, expensive proprietary memory cards that are required, its showpiece title being $50, launching in a weak shopping month, and a month that Apple could be dominating headlines with their new products. Not to mention that the market and economy aren't the same, and it's also competing against a cheaper handheld in the 3DS with Mario Kart and Mario 3D Land. Nintendo who has been dominating and printing money in the handheld market for over 20 years found out that things weren't the same last year. Even with all its pretty pixels, I don't see how it will fare better than 3DS did, but maybe Sony would consider those kinds of numbers a success early on.

PlayStation Vita Review

The same sort of old-school thinking that locks out independent development to all but the coddled few is apparent elsewhere in the Vita design. It's in the proprietary USB cable and lack of universal USB charging, it's in the absence of onboard memory, and it's in proprietary, mandatory memory cards that are sold separately. Sony has said that it intends to go after core gamers first with Vita before tackling the mass market, and perhaps we are tolerant enough to put up with these little niggles and tolls (we usually complain and then hand over our money anyway), but these things will do Vita few favours when it tries to capture attention further afield.

Leaving those concerns aside, PlayStation Vita's great selling point should be that it offers high-definition gaming experiences on the go with the same improving social features - like friend and messaging alerts, Trophies and "near", which looks like a fun way of benefitting from the installed base growing around you day to day, rather like 3DS' StreetPass - and the same diverse array of content. More than ever, this is a device that fits Sony's marketing slug: "It only does everything."

For now then, PlayStation Vita is potentially the most powerful and flexible gaming handheld ever, but it is already a fantastic one. It has been built on old logic, and it may not be a successful commercial venture - the knives are already out for it in some quarters - but it has already yielded some brilliant titles and Sony has a history of strongly supporting its own formats with a mixture of traditional and innovative software, while Vita's functional similarity to home consoles makes it very third-party friendly, so it feels like a safe bet providing nothing catastrophic happens to Sony itself.

If you find iOS and Android hardware restrictive and yearn for home console experiences on the go, then by rights this is where they should appear if they are still to be found anywhere in the years to come. Between PlayStation Vita and a rejuvenated Nintendo 3DS, hardcore gamers are now spoiled for choice when they leave the house. Long may that continue.
