So, even though I distinctly remember the original "Final Fantasy" being released on NES way back in the day, I've never really been a big RPG fan. The first RPG I really played (and liked) a lot was "Final Fantasy VII" on the original Playstation, and I guess that would be the game that got me interested in the genre - it's still my fave RPG to this day. Anyhoo, with the advent of emulators I tried to go back and play the original Final Fantasy just for s*it's-n-giggles, but the game just looked too fugly for me to stay interested....I know, that's very graphic-whorey of me to say, but just being honest - some NES games still look fine to this day - FF1 is not one of them. I just recently discovered (despite them being out for a year) that Square re-made the original Final Fantasy 1 and 2 for iOS, so I decided to give it a whirl....
Is anyone else playing this or have you tried them? I've started Final Fantasy 1 and the re-done graphics are really quite nice; the game itself is one of the few console-based games that can function well on a touch-screen (since it doesn't require precision control or rapid button presses). I like the bright re-worked colors, and while the game itself is still very basic RPG (as one would expect for a 25 year old game), it's fun and oddly just as compelling as the more recent graphical powerhouse Final Fantasies. I still like the turn-based mechanics of the game, and the way each guy steps up and does his thing in turn. Maybe it's just a throw-back to my youth, who knows, but I am finding the game really enjoyable. And for the first time I have found that the iPhone can be a legit gaming platform for stuff other than throw-aways like Angry Birds or random pointless swipe-o-rama...
Random odd observation (as if the entire post isn't one): I was at Best Buy the other day, and I noticed that the iPhone screen is actually almost the exact same size as the new 3DS main 3-D screen...unexpected, since I thought the 3DS screen was a lot bigger. Optical illusion, apparently...
