    Re: Wii U Discussion

I'm probably going to go the Zelda route. Already have Mario and pikmin, not really interested in WiiU Party.

      Re: Wii U Discussion

Nintendo posted a $457m loss for this most recent quarter, citing the Wii U for many of their troubles. To try and help Wii U sales they're going to try and make more Nintendo DS games available on the virtual console and introduce more games that use the tablet gamepad.

That is quite the chunk of change. Shame that Nintendo needed a massive loss as a reason for a full back catalog.

If Nintendo had just said the Wii U games will come in time lets devote to getting all N64, Gamecube, SNES, GBA and DS games on the Wii U Shop they would have a hit. Steam has taught people to enjoy buying games sometimes more than playing them and who doesn't love revisiting old classics? A huge missed opportunity.

Marketing just sucks. I use mine almost daily (until I had to send it in). Love the interface, love the fact that it's focus is on GAMING. I use my Chromecast for all the other stuff on my phone/tablets.

          Can't wait for Mario Kart.

            Wii U Discussion

Between Mario 3d world, donkey kong and soon Mario kart the wii u has the best games out compared to the other next gen systems. Nintendo is lazy IMO. The fact that they do not have a Mario tennis or golf game out yet or even announced is awful. People by Nintendo systems just for these Mario titles and they need to take advantage of that.

Agreed. Even with HD support I still wouldn't buy any non exclusive for the Wii. I finally bought a Wii U 2 weeks ago because Mario Kart and eventually Smash Bros. Currently there are 3 games out that I have and want no more. Mario 3D world, New Super Mario Bros & Donkey Kong.

That's all I have too. Well and zelda because it came with the system. Also have wii party because I essentially got a free controller buying it.

                  Re: Wii U Discussion

Games are lagging behind because like pretty much every other Japanese publisher and developer last generation, Nintendo has admitted to struggling with the transition to HD and how much resources it takes to create assets.

No amount of games or marketing is changing the Wii U's fortunes when the anchor of the system is the Gamepad. It's the reason for its high price and why they lose money on every system sold. Having owned a Wii U for 6 months now, while the Gamepad is neat, it's not essential at all. Nintendo's own games don't even use it any meaningful way. Trying to sell it with DS titles reeks of desperation and just makes the thing look like even more of an afterthought. But maybe their new hardware will be ready for 2016 so their okay with just limping along.

                    Re: Wii U Discussion

That's kind of my impression too 'going to make sure the gamepad is used more and we'll re-sell you some DS titles' is kind of a non-announcement and a really big reach to say anything positive or forward looking.

I'd like them to go back to basics... next console go a touch more traditional and powerful so they don't forefit 3rd party support out of the gate, pledge backward compatibility for retail and digital Wii/Wii U titles, and also promise access to virtual console from all capable devices now and into the future.

Do all of that and re-brand it under back under the Nintendo Entertainment System and announce new hardware and I'd consider getting a Wii U in the meantime knowing I'm not throwing away money on any titles as they'll work on a new console out Fall 2015 or thereabouts.

I love the game pad. It's underrated IMO. I can play games while my wife is watching silly hgtv shows on tv.

Nintendo made a it mistake not making the system more powerful. It didn't have to be like a PS4 but it had to be more powerful than the PS3 and it wasn't in many areas. Madden looked bad on it. If it was better maybe people would have bought non Nintendo games on it.

I don't see Nintendo putting out another console. They will be handheld only and that is a reach. I think they get out of the hardware business altogether. They used to be able to use Mario to make a profit off hardware. That profit is gone so you might as well expand your software profit by going to other systems.

They have something like $15b in the bank, they can pretty comfortably take whichever path they choose, I think they're another Wii U situation after this from seriously considering something like that imo.

Would love to play Nintendo games on my other consoles though for sure!

                            Nintendo's Investors Meeting:

WiiU target of 3.6m units will need more manufactured than in current inventory, no loss from hardware any more, more games at E3
Iwata - we are preparing for next generation hardware as always doing, when release? Difficult to declare..
Iwata- not hopeless or at a loss in coming up with something new but unless existing users satisfied we cannot release next hardware

                            Also...

Nintendo Will Debut These Skylanders-Style Figures at E3

Nintendo will create interactive figurines like the ones used in popular videogames like Skylanders and Disney Infinity of its popular characters like Super Mario, which will work with a variety of different new games for Wii U and 3DS, the company’s CEO Satoru Iwata has said at a briefing for investors.
Nintendo aims to position the figures as not being tied to any single game or genre, but as accessories that can be used with a wide variety of different games.

Nintendo said, as shown above, that by transferring game data back and forth between a variety of games and the character figurines, players can create a “personal, customized” character. Its code name for the initiative is “NFP,” for “Nintendo Figurine Platform.”
the GamePad controller has an NFC reader built in.

Thus far, Nintendo has made very little use of this functionality. Unveiling a suite of NFC-based games and figures at E3 is part of its overall stated goal of showing games at this year’s expo that justify the existence of the expensive GamePad controller, which has a large touchscreen that is rarely used to much effect in the games Nintendo has released on Wii U thus far.

Nintendo will release a separate base accessory that will communicate with the portable 3DS devices via infrared, so that the figurines can also be used on 3DS.

By including this functionality in Wii U, Nintendo has planted something of a Trojan horse into players’ homes. Now it can sell them games that use the figurines without having to convince them to pay up for a bundle package containing the game and a “power base.”

It could even give the games away for free via download, and make its money purely on the sales of the figurines.
