    Re: Wii U Discussion

Yeah I would have loved to see Mario Kart 8 support:

2 player mode, 1 on TV, 1 on GamePad
3 player mode, 2 on TV, 1 on GamePad
5 player mode, 4 on TV, 1 on GamePad

But I guess they weren't able to get it running in time for release. It's a shame, because the game's main competitor, Sonic Transformed, supports 5 players on the Wii U using that setup.

Anyway, I have an online room up now if anyone wants to race.

Go to the Wii U homepage and tap on the orange smiley face at the bottom left corner of the screen. You can add friend names from there.

Is anyone else getting a ton of "communication errors" today? I keep getting dropped out of online games randomly.

I'm also unable to upload any of my Time Trials ghosts at the moment.

That gif is perfect in so many ways

And yeah, I was getting a decent amount of communication errors last night. It may take Nintendo a minute to adjust to having more than the usual 50 people on their network at any given time.

I went to pickup the Mario Kart 8 32GB bundle from gamestop yesterday, but they were sold out. I was told that they're only getting 2 of these bundles every week. Thankfully I know the manager and he's holding onto one for me when they come in.

It will be interesting to see how the Wii U's sales improve after this week's launch.

Super Mario 3D Land's release barely made a difference over the holidays, but now that the PS4 and Xbox One are out, I wonder how many people adopted the Wii U as a "second system" this week.

                  Re: Wii U Discussion

Mario Kart has much more broader appeal. It will certainly bump sales in terms of, "hey, this looks better than last month's sales, but last month's were so terrible". I just don't see it having a big meaningful and sustainable impact because there's much bigger problems. The Gamepad being the biggest due to increasing the cost of the system and all indications are Nintendo won't be offering a Wii U without it. The price needs to come down, it needs better marketing, possibly even a re-branding, along with software that actually utilizes and sells that Gamepad and more software that has broader appeal. There was a lady in front me on Friday buying MK8 for her son and thought you could play it on the Wii before the rep told her otherwise.

The Wii U is sandwiched between the current and last gen. All Nintendo has right now is their loyal fans and those that still care about Nintendo games. They lost the demographic they brought in with the Wii and were naive to think they would just come over when that's an unpredictable audience. And without third-parties they have no shot at the "core gamer", but did they ever?

                      Me either...I love it.

Nintendo's made some blunders that's for sure especially in the advertising section. Hope they get their act together soon.

I like it too. My biggest disappointment is that the gamepad is probably best for the hardcore audience and those games aren't being made on the Wii U for lack of power/low sales. The tablet controller is great for sports games and would make it easy to control weapons and inventory on other games.
My kids had a blast playing MK8 this weekend. I only played a little. I'm not a huge racing guy and prefer ModNation Racers more. I like the track itself to be more challenging and have less interference from being shot at by the other drivers on the course. The tracks in MK8 certainly look really nice and are cool.

Just don't like it's affect on the price. I'd buy a Wii U at $150 w/ pro controller. See also the X1 and Kinect.

Ideally, decouple the gamepad from the main SKU, let 3rd parties in on the action via an accessory you can snap onto Android/Apple tablets as well as dedicated devices. Iterate (multitouch, more horsepower, etc) on the product separately but in a way that ensures backward compatibility. Longer term blur the lines between the tablet and Nintendo DS ecosystem/hardware.

Pipe dream, I know, but that's what I'd like to see. My hope now is a relatively inexpensive fully backward compatible Wii U2.

The kinect and gamepad add functionality. When you factor in what they cost over the life of a system generation they are well worth it.

Mario Kart 8 is on a Roll: Sells More Than 1.2 Million Units Worldwide Over First Weekend

                                REDMOND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Momentum is spelled M-A-R-I-O K-A-R-T.

The Mario Kart 8 game for the Wii U console just launched around the world to global acclaim, earning some of the strongest review scores in franchise history, including becoming the 14th Wii U game to launch in the U.S. with a Metacritic score of 85 or higher. Nintendo reported today that the game sold more than 1.2 million* total units across Japan, Europe and the Americas during its first weekend on the market.

“The early response to Mario Kart 8 demonstrates that the best days for Wii U are still ahead,” said Nintendo of America president and COO Reggie Fils-Aime. “This year’s E3 is just days away, and it will be all about the future games for Nintendo platforms. This milestone is a great place to start!”

Prior to Mario Kart 8, the seven games that have launched previously in the series have combined to sell more than 100 million total units worldwide. This includes two of the best-selling video games of all time: Mario Kart Wii for Wii and Mario Kart DS for the Nintendo DS family of systems. The full list includes:
