Nintendo doesn't purposefully ship a limited number of consoles. You can only crank out so many. At one point, the rate of Wii production was higher than any console ever. There were more Wiis available in the first year than any other console in history, and it was also the fastest console ever to 20 million sold in the US. There were months that the Wii was selling more consoles in the US than Sony or MS were in a quarter.
The demand for the Wii was insane, and maybe only Apple has had to deal with something like that for years. Retailers also took advantage of the shortages by holding stock for holidays and forcing bundles.
I don't know. I wonder how many people got preorders just to flip though. Outside the preorders selling fast, the wiiu just doesn't seem to have as much mainstream hype the wii did. People flipping the ps3 on ebay got burned by more supply than demand.
