Re: New Nintendo Console in 2012?

And either MS or Sony will give us some news of their new console at E3 2012, before Wii U is here.

PS. mods - any chance of taking the "?" off the heading of the OP.

      Not really.

It'll be easier to scale next gen games down to the Wii U than it was with putting 360/ps3 games on the Wii. At launch, the wii's cpu was based on like 9 years old tech and the gpu was based on the Flipper chip used in the gamecube. Now, devs will be able to use the same modern tools and engines they do for ps3/360 games.

Regardless of power, I do think it puts Nintendo in a dreamcast position though. They'll have to convince core gamers to leave their achievements, trophies, friends, and online services to give the Wii U a shot when the next playstation and xbox aren't far off. MS will also be there with kinect to tempt the same wii owners Nintendo hopes to upgrade for HD motion gaming. MS will undoubtedly have the price advantage there, and may choose to have a $199 kinect arcade bundle this holiday, a full year before the Wii U launches.

The controller scheme is funky with the Wii vs other consoles too, unless they release a more traditional controller. Many are going to be using Wiimotes and nunchucks still with only 1 of the touch controllers per system.

News this morning is that it will not play Blu-Ray (no surprise) OR DVDS (what?). They don't want to pay licensing costs for either, and think people have enough options already. Not really all that surprising, but disappointing because it means we likely won't get to see some creative use of the touch controller with movies.

I still believe that Nintendo sees itself as either the first choice for the non-hardcore crowd or the second/alternate option for those who already own the other systems. They didn't try to beat ps3/360 with the Wii, they created their own niche, and I think that's exactly what they're continuing with, which is why they don't see the need to include a bluray or DVD player.

I know I'll be a ps3 owner who also owns a Wii U, just like I did with the ps3 and Wii.

Sounds about right to me. Everyone's screaming, "What why aren't they doing what the PS3 and 360 already do?" and they're missing the point. Nintendo does its own thing, and it's worked well for them. MS and Sony want to be multimedia centers, which is great, definitely. But Nintendo seems to be going for something different, something all its own.

Nintendo is always a game machine. They aren't trying to be a full home entertainment solution.. and that's just fine with me.

Here’s a question you might have heard a few times last week: why can’t Nintendo make a console that will give Sony and Microsoft a run for their money? The answer is simple, but it’s going over the heads of some people. Here’s why Nintendo “can’t” emulate Sony & Microsoft’s approach to making consoles.

Not bad business really, and nothing wrong with something different.

Still, this gen has only made people forget that Nintendo always put out competitive consoles capable of great graphics, when the costs weren't insane. Now they're just regarded as a lazy, kiddie company with no dude games and outdated hardware.

I'm still not impressed by the Wii U and while the over sized controller is innovative I am still trying to figure out why they would only have 1 working with the system when the feedback is that people would love that for multi-play. Imagine using that during football games to pick plays. Unless Nintendo is holding back to release some add-on that will support a second one.

"The new controller is an impressive thing to hold in your hands. It feels solid and comfortable, and nothing about it marks it as a weak link. The screen itself is bright and beautiful, much clearer than the screen on an iPad, and even small details of the games are able to be seen clearly. The controller's speakers also do a good job of delivering information to the player via audio clues."

That's something Nintendo is apparently working on, if they haven't already solved it.

                              Develop

Nintendo engineers are working hard to upgrade Wii U so that it can simultaneously support two tablet controllers, Develop understands.

A trusted game development executive has said there are numerous indications within the Wii U codebase that the console is, at the very least, being prepared to operate with two touch-screen pads.

Nintendo and development partners had previously indicated that only one tablet controller could work with the system, due to technical limitations.

But Develop’s source, speaking on the condition of anonymity, explained that multi-tablet support is one of three remaining variables for the next-gen console. The other two are RAM capacity and processor speed.

The person said Nintendo appears to be on the cusp of solving the technical conundrum of a single Wii U device supporting two tablet controllers. The source added that there was no indication, and very little chance, that four tablet controllers would ever be supported.

                                Re: Wii U Discussion

I'm sure most people realized this was likely, but it's still news:

Wii U Will Not Support DVD/Blu-Ray

Nintendo have confirmed that the Wii U will not play DVDs, BluRays or GameCube discs but will support Wii games.
Those of you hoping the Wii U would be an entertainment powerhouse are set to be disappointed as Nintendo reveals that DVDs, BluRays and GameCube titles will not be playable on the new system.
This won't come as a surprise to many Nintendo gamers as no previous Nintendo console (apart from the Japan exclusive Panasonic Q) have supported DVDs. The lack of GameCube games have got people speculating whether such titles will appear in the Wii U version of the Virtual Console though and Nintendo did state last year that GameCube titles would be downloadable on Wii U before going back on their word.
Many people believe that with the growing popularity of streaming content, DVDs and BluRays won't be a necessity as the likes of LOVEFiLM and Netflix begin to play bigger roles in the entertainment industry.
