Handhelds have been Nintendo's bread and butter for awhile now, but their probably getting most of the 3DS stuff out of the way so they can focus on Wii U at E3.

I think this Nintendo Direct was planned to focus on the 3DS, so the WiiU stuff was just bonus info. I expect it to start ramping up closer to E3 as well.

No Nintendo Press Conference at E3 2013

"We decided not to host a large-scale presentation targeted at everyone in the international audience where we announce new information as we did in the past," Iwata said. "Instead, at the E3 show this year, we are planning to host a few smaller events that are specifically focused on our software lineup for the U.S. market. There will be one closed event for American distributors, and we will hold another closed hands-on experience event, for mainly the Western gaming media."
Iwata explained the decision, pointing to recent Nintendo Direct presentations as an example of the company's new approach.

"In the past we invited reporters, investors and analysts, industry partners, such as software publishers, and distributors who attended E3 to our large-scale presentations," Iwata explained. "We also used them as a communication tool in which we broadcast our presentations on the Internet to reach out to video game fans around the globe. I believe that many are expecting us to host a similar event this year. On the other hand, since we set out on new endeavors such as Nintendo Direct two years ago in October, we have been paying special attention to the fact that different people demand different types of information from us."

"For example, as video game fans are looking for information about games, it seems that they are less interested in sales figures that investors and analysts on the other hand attach much greater importance to, and distribution partners are looking for information on how we are going to market our products in the immediate future," he continued. "At previous financial briefing sessions we announced information about our products, showed videos and even uploaded the recording of these events onto our website, but given that we now have an established method such as Nintendo Direct, we feel that we will be able to deliver our messages more appropriately and effectively by doing so individually based on the various needs of different groups of people."

"At E3 this year, we are not planning to launch new hardware, and our main activity at E3 will be to announce and have people experience our software. Many people are certainly very interested in learning more about the Wii U titles that we are going to announce. We will use E3 as an ideal opportunity to talk in detail mainly about the Wii U titles that we are going to launch this year, and we also plan to make it possible for visitors to try the games immediately. As a brand new challenge, we are working to establish a new presentation style for E3."

Wow. I wonder if they released their E3-slated announcements already at the last Nintendo Direct in to get at least try and muster some good news ahead of the dismal financials/outlook this week.

Seems that way, or this is in fact a new strategy which IMO is a horrible one.

I'm sure they aren't dumb enough to blow their E3 load on a Nintendo Direct in April. They'll probably have a lot of stuff to announce at E3 time, they just won't do it with a hour long presser that everyone will criticize and compare to Microsoft's and Sony's mega-next-gen-blowout conferences.

Anyone download the update yet? I haven't had a chance to download it yet as I had to leave town yesterday until Sunday.

                Are things noticeably improved?

Downloaded but haven't tested. Got home late, started it, and had the system power down after downloading.

I would never pay extra for any monster cable. A cheap $5 or $10 HDMI cable is all you ever need FF.

As for games we only have NintendoLand, Super Mario, Sonic racing game (but I would hold off and wait for Mario Kart) and Lego City. Mario is also releasing a massive Luigi DLC with 82 new levels later this year. My kids will love the Yoshi Yarn game when that comes out as well.

EA has given up on supporting the Wii U for now. If hardware sales spike they will come back. EA is about making money. Once the userbase is higher they will support it.

It does suck. I don't understand why they don't support Tiger or Madden, especially since they made Madden last year. The touch screen play calling was a great idea and I was thinking about going Wii U for Madden IF the games were the same.

I said it at the time, I couldn't understand why EA made Madden for the Wii U last year since everyone had already bought the game and the userbase was so low. I was worried the resulting poor sales would hurt support and it did. EA made no sense. They should have skipped last year and made the game this year. Oh well. The Wii U was always about the first party Nintendo games but it would have been nice to check out Madden this year.

In that same vein, why no Tiger on this system? Tiger on the Wii had rounded into form nicely with the motion plus, and now they could do that with HD graphics.
                                Puzzling indeed...
