In Wii mode, the Wii U literally becomes a Wii. There you can access the Wii VC through the Wii shop channel. Differences are no full Gamepad support and Miiverse connectivity for Wii VC titles.

It's basically a full functioning Wii emulator built into the Wii U.

Technically, it's not a Wii emulator. It's a Wii. That's why you have to go into Wii mode. It shuts the Wii U stuff off and becomes just a Wii.

Main difference is just what games are available, for example the original Wii had N64 games for download, the Wii U does not.

As others have said you have to go into Wii mode which in essence makes your Wii U into a Wii. Remember that to play Wii games you still need a Wii mote+numchuck (depending on game) and some VC game require a special controller. Oh and Wii U can not play GameCube game in case your were wondering.

            This sounds interesting.

Shacknews - Affordable Space Adventures preview: pimp my Wii U

Affordable Space Adventures begins with the player taking control of what I can best describe as a space jalopy. It’s a broken-down spaceship that has endured some heavy damage and is stranded on a dangerous planet. The idea is to navigate the handicapped ship to safety and avoid any hazards along the way. As the game progresses, the ship will gradually regain its functions and slowly regenerate its abilities.

What sets Affordable Space Adventures apart from similar games is that the player is manually controlling every element of the spaceship's functions through the GamePad's touch screen. I started off by touching the ignition to activate the ship before flying around with the dual control sticks. More elements of the combustion engine opened up, like thrust engines and stabilizers. Later in the demo, I was able to switch over to an electric engine, which came with its own distinct abilities.
Other puzzles are significantly more dangerous, as hostile robots will begin to litter areas. Scanning the robots will help indicate how far their lasers can reach, so that players could potentially fly around the danger. In some cases, you'll have to fly through a robot’s line of sight, but detection is avoidable, as long as certain conditions are met. For example, one robot could detect heat, so I had to lower the ship's thrusters and set the stabilizers to their lowest setting to make sure that they didn't trigger the robot's sensors. These stealth elements are a nice mix to an otherwise straightforward puzzle experience.
Affordable Space Adventures is early in development, but the potential for innovation is there. This game demonstrates potential new ways to utilize the controller's touch pad for an engaging gameplay purpose. I only scratched the surface of what the spaceship is capable of, as I noticed several other abilities that were just waiting to be unlocked to turn my space jalopy into a sweet galactic ride.

Affordable Space Adventures is aiming to release on Wii U later this year as a downloadable title.

I turned my WiiU horizontal, it had been vertical since launch but we've had a couple games freeze. In looking online, seems that the system was fully intended to be horizontal. I never understood the vertical thing anyway, but it definitely fit better especially with the big pad LOL. We'll see how that goes.

Team vertical here, because it came with the feet, looks better standing, and the drive noise is the same.

Was vertical to match my Wii on the other side of the TV, but then flipped them both horizontal about a month or so ago just for kicks. More dust on surface now, though.

(yes, I play it daily...It's just that EVERYTHING collects dust)

That's great for the Wii U. I still don't get why Nintendo isn't putting GBA games on the 3DS, though. To me that's a natural fit.

Oddly enough the 3DS can't properly emulate GBA games, or at least not to Nintendo's ridiculously high standards. The ambassador program GBA games disable all 3DS functionality and they had store the games in RAM in order to trick the system into thinking their DS games. So high standards, plus more technical hurdles.

This just seems crazy...I've always wondered though.

I know emulation can be tricky, but Nintendo could make so much money pushing more of these onto 3DS, you know?

Ah, well that does make sense even if I don't agree with it, lol. Good thing I still have a GBA SP, although I'd really like a 101 model that has the brighter backlight.

The battery life on that Pro controller is great. My wife and I separately went through Super Mario Bros U getting 100% each on that controller and I beat Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze before ever needing to recharge it. I have to recharge my PS4 controller almost daily after use.
