No insight, but people seem to expect Nintendo to just fall in line and offer a very similar box as the other two and I don't think that will be the case. From Iwata's comments, it sounds like NX will be multiple form factors, common architecture, and a shared ecosystem. I think their going to continue to offer something a little different, but this time cheaper, thanks in part to not making costly bets like with the Wii U Gamepad and 3D for 3DS.

Besides the past couple years, 60% of their revenue came from hardware sales. Which is always funny when people throw out all these hypothetical statements on how it will be a slam dunk for Nintendo to go third-party, but never once take into account the negatives that come with such a decision. Despite profit margins being far from bad, lets just slash hardware revenue, have far less control, risk-aversion, have to pay royalties to sell games on other platforms, lay off a lot of people, and now compete in a volatile market where the expectations for production values are exceedingly higher than anything we've ever done.

I'm not sure people understand just how beneficial it is to be a platform holder.

As long as they do step up their next console I'm all for it.

Also, for me, I simply mean IF they'd go 3rd party (not that it was going to be easy- except for me )) it would be 1 less system to buy and not have to get a Nintendo console just for their games. I'd love to get a Nintendo console and be able to get games like Madden, Battlefield etc.. on it.
So they need to get up to speed.

But how much money they made off the Wii and prior to this no longer counts. The video game world has changed so much with mobile gaming you can't assume Nintendo can still profit off their hardware (at least console). If they aren't making any money off their hardware (or worse losing on it) then restricting their first party games to the weakest console out there doesn't make up for the lack of royalty fees by producing games for the other systems with much larger install bases.

Nintendo had very low net sales in 2014 although they did return to making a profit rather than losing money like they had been. This is due to the 3DS and certainly not the Wii U. While they may have been a very strong company in the past with large amounts of cash, so was Blackberry. The markets are changing fast.

            Re: Wii U Discussion

We'll see with NX. I think they can get back to making significant profits off hardware if it's cheap and they get the messaging right this time. While there's no denying the handheld market has shrunk considerably, over 50 million sold for 3DS is certainly not insignificant and there's still plenty of money to be made there going forward. The Wii U being a colossal failure is what really what brought everything down. This is why they will be exploring other avenues of revenue (licensing, mobile, and QoL). The current money printer is Amiibo.

            ...

What if the quality of Nintendo games suffered as a result of going third-party? How is the company morale after such a massive restructuring? Is their a large exodus in talent like with SEGA and Atari? How hard is the transition to learn completely new hardware? Would the teams still have the same creative freedom? Do the many Nintendo IPs that don't sell millions and millions (this includes Metroid which we can't even get a proper installment with now) still get made? Does Nintendo still fund the development of niche and quirky titles (Bayonetta 2)?

How do we truly know how Nintendo games would fare on other consoles, where the demographics are different and data shows they enjoy different games? While certain Nintendo IP is still very strong, has their overall appeal somewhat diminished these days?

Going third-party isn't a strategy to grow a company, it's a desperation to salvage a dying one and Nintendo is very far from that.

They just better get with the big boys with next console. Again though IF they went 3rd party... not because I feel they need to but IF they did, it would be 1 less system I'd need.
              That was my point.
Anyways I don't think they are near dying but they need to wake up.

Haha yup. I could see them going handheld only before third party.

Late to this discussion but playing Mario on PS4 would be so badass. It would look amazing and I could get trophies. What more fun experience than trying to get a Mario Platinum?

Probably playing the game for fun how you want to without worrying about the silly little achievement system?

On a side note, that's sarcasm. Kinda. I don't knock anyone for enjoying achievement/trophy systems. If that's your thing, good on ya. I just think it's a silly thing that takes away from a lot of games.

We were using Gamepad and the pro controller but we both were controlling the same guy. It wouldn't assign a controller to player 2. Anyone ever run into this?
