I bought my son a Wii u for his birthday. Along with super Mario bro Wii u and nintendoland preloaded on there. I also got him NeS remix and super Mario maker (for me mostly). I had a grin on my face and it was awesome.

Wii U reportedly discontinuing production later this year.

Wonder if we'll get a fire sale for the holidays if the NX isn't ready.

Like most Nintendo systems lately not named Nintendo DS, it's a highly under appreciated system with more good or great games than people want to give it credit for.

I'd get one for $99, since you can also play Wii games on it and the VC library is decent.

It's too bad they never did a console + pro controller bundle for $99-$150.

Hope the NX does a better job of establishing an ecosystem. A modern online network, a number of modular devices (portable, console, accessories), etc.

Wii U never had a Wii Sports and a demographic-busting appeal and price point.

Big N says not so fast (linking kotaku because it sources a japanese language site for Nintendo's response, otherwise I'd just link the source):

Lol, well... I wouldn't exactly call that a denial. They basically said nothing at all, which in most cases all but confirms the rumor.

                        Nintendo's quote...

“This isn’t an announcement from our company.” <--- Yah, no ****.

The spokesperson added, “From the next quarter and thereafter as well, production [of the Wii U] is scheduled to continue.” <--- So next quarter, and until otherwise stated, you'll continue production. Again, yah, no ****. The rumor was production would cease at the end of the year. Saying you'll continue production next quarter means nothing.

Like I said, this does more to confirm the rumor than deny it. It's definitely happening.

The problem with the Wii U was it only released a good game every 6 months.
It was virtually void of any AAA 3rd party titles, no EA support and lacked a new Zelda title (a big NO NO).

This and the fact that Nintendo seems clueless as how to do online. As I recall from my own Wii U experience the only game we ever played online was Mario Kart against random people. There is no messaging system like Live, people have weird names like x9393k3d instead of Catch22 nicknames and it's just silly.

Nintendo needs to get some help with online play and get it up to the standards of at least PSN for this system. A start would be assigning people nicknames and having a standard messaging system with party, etc.

Yeah, as far as online goes Nintendo simply had no vision and was living in their own world, ignoring the competition: It's Hard to Make a Game When Nintendo Doesn't Use Xbox Live, Says Dev
The money quote, though, comes from his team's dealings with Nintendo as they tried to build their game's online capabilities even though support for them would be coming very late in the console's development. His team would offer certain scenarios to Nintendo to ask how things might work, "all the time referencing how Xbox Live and PSN achieve the same thing.

"At some point in this conversation we were informed that it was no good referencing Live and PSN as nobody in their development teams used those systems (!) so could we provide more detailed explanations for them?"

They seem to finally be making steps to catch up, but we'll see what the end result is.

dude that is mind boggling, how can they be so out of touch? it seems Nintendos arrogance knows no bounds....someone needs to tell them we aren't in the 80's anymore and they need to know their competition inside and out so they can not just equal them but improve upon them and beat them!
