Report: EA Developing For Microsoft's Next Xbox

Citing an unnamed source, UK-based video game industry magazine Develop is reporting that Microsoft has provided Electronic Arts with development hardware that will become the next Xbox as early as 2012.

According to the report, the hardware is housed in a PC shell, a common practice for early console development kits. Develop's source, described as a "senior, trusted, well-placed" person who works at neither EA nor Microsoft, told the magazine an E3 2011 reveal is likely.

We've reached out to Microsoft and EA for comment.

Pretty interesting..maybe EA will be better prepared for a 'Next Gen' console with what seemingly appears to be an upper hand..

I'm not getting my hopes up that the next console version of Madden will be good. Nice to look at? Yeah, but they're always bare bones as far as features are concerned. This could have something to do with the announcement of the new three year plan.

I didnt even think about that 3 year plan thing...you're right, this could have something to do with that.

Should be interesting when more info comes out about this.

Not surprising that companies are looking into next-generation hardware years ahead of schedule. The exact same thing happened prior to the release of the XBOX360 and, prior to that, the PS2.

It will be interesting if both Nintendo and MS have new hardware to unveil at E3 in a month away.

Re: Report: EA Developing For Microsoft's Next Xbox

I wonder if a 2012 release is accurate. With Kinect being released just recently, and a tonne of Xbox 360 console's sold, I wonder if that would tick off a lot of people?

I know I'm tired of buying a new console ever 4-6 years. I doubt I'll get this one right away.

My kids are happy with the 360 and I barely game anymore. There's no need to run out and ge this new box first-thing.

              Yeah, that would be awesome...

..but than I take a step back and realize Xbox 360 was awesome and so was PS3...but regarding the games (like Madden for example), just never seem to get the most out of this current gen.

I just hope with this extra time, EA is better prepared as far as development of games are concerned...because we all know that after you rush the first product, all of the rest never reach its potential.

It seems like we are finally figuring out this 'Next Gen' console thing..and of course it seems like once they have it figured out (after revamping pretty much everything they started with), they will be moving on to the next 'Big Thing' haha

Its already been reported by Kotaku that Microsoft And Sony Targeting 2014 For New Consoles, here is the link:

So basically I dont think we will be hearing anything soon of a new console (being that they already crushed that theory of it being announced at E3)

Best thing to do is wait a year or so after the new console releases. Personally, I think that is what I'm doing this next time around. I think we all got burned big time with sports games this past generation and not really wanting to go through the same crap again, unless some awesome launch title(s) release.

By 2012 I'm ready for a new console. It will also depend on the price. If the next new console to come out is $300, I'd get it day one for sure. $400 maybe. $500 I can wait.

Re: Report: EA Developing For Microsoft's Next Xbox

                        I'm definitely waiting.
Outside of graphics, there are very few games on this generation that don't play and feel the exact same as the last two generation consoles.

When Red Dead was nearly released we heard how every action had a ripple-affect. If you murdered the town blacksmith, his offspring may hunt you down one day.
Or if you killed a town, it would take weeks (real time) before it would become populated again.
They were promising a truly dynamic and organic world that changed with every action.
Of course, this never happened and the developers said it was due to limitations of today's consoles.

Well that's the kind of things I expect from this next generation of consoles.
I don't care one iota if I can see the sweat on an ant's butt.
I'm not a 12-year-old anymore where Graphics are the most important thing. Sure, they help, but after the first 10-15 minutes of firing up a new game, I barely notice the graphics anymore. I'm far more into the gameplay, story or sport of the game.

So if Xbox 720 and PS4 come out, and EA's NHL 16 still has horrible simmed stats. If FNC still doesn't have a decent career mode, or FPS's are still 'clear room, advance to next room, clear room, repeat', then forget it. I'm not dropping another cent on a new console.

For years we were told that the machines prevented the developers from fully utilizing their imaginations. Well that's bunk. I don't think a lot of these guys (save a tiny few) have any originality in their bones.

It's time to use the technology to give us something truly different. Because over the past 20 years, I still reminisce about NES and SNES games more than I do with today's consoles.

It's time Sony, Nintendo and MS truly blow our brains out with what they have in store.
I'm not going to settle for Gears of War 2.0.

Update 3: Electronic Arts' director of corporate communications Jeff Brown said in a statement to IGN, "This story is a total fabrication – 100 percent not true."

Update 2: A trusted development source tells IGN, "To the best of my knowledge no one here knows what [the new Xbox] will be. Only that it will probably drop in 2013."

I'll be ready in about 2014. No need for a new one yet, especially 2012. MAYBE I'll accept Holiday 2013.

There's no way I'm dropping money for a new console before 2015. There is still a lot one can do on the current generation...
