Sony PlayStation Pulse Wireless Stereo Headset Elite Edition hands-on

By Joe Pollicino posted Jun 8th 2012 12:48AM
    Hands-On

Aside from the PlayStation Move Racing Wheel and Wonderbook, Sony has one more accessory to show off at E3 -- the Pulse Wireless Stereo Headset Elite Edition. Naturally, we hunted down this peripheral aimed at all-things audio to check it out for ourselves. The PWSHEE is the company's second full-on PS3 headset to date, expanding on what it offered with its Wireless Stereo Headset from last year. As we're told, the headset is also ushering in a new Pulse moniker for its PlayStation oriented ear-blasters, although there's no word on what we can expect down the line. For now, this unit packs a lot on paper for its $150 price, touting key features like 7.1 virtual surround sound, PS Vita and cellphone compatibility (thanks to a detachable cable with inline remote / mic), BassImpact technology for massive low-end pulse (get it?), audio profiles, higher-fidelity drivers than the WSH and hidden noise-cancelling microphones for chatting. Does it have the potential to live up to its hype and one-up its $80 predecessor? Join us past the break for our initial impressions.
Sony PlayStation Wireless Stereo Headset Pulse Edition

Visually speaking, the PWSHEE is less futuristic looking than the Wireless Stereo headset and it's not a bad thing either -- we wouldn't feel dorky wearing it in public. The back of the earcups are finished in a deep glossy black with chrome circles on the yokes, while the the rest of the headset has a textured matte finish like the PS3. Although the drivers are new, the the size, shape and even the cups, and even the fauxe-leather earpads felt exactly the same to our ears as what's on the WSH -- not surprising, as the PWSHEE uses that headset as its foundation. Those pads had our head sweating in the past, so it's shame that cloth versions are, again, not on offer. The headband and yokes are completely redesigned here, featuring two points of contact and more traditional adjustment rails, but the earcups still don't fold flat and padding is sparse under the headband. Despite these minor quirks, the headset fit our noggin very comfortably, and we don't feel as though it would be a burden to wear these during a gaming marathon.
So that's the design. Let's dig into those features. One major complaint we had the WSH was its retractable boom mic -- namely that it felt flimsy and put an annoying light in our line of vision. This time around the noise-cancelling microphones are hidden in the earcups, and although we had no means to test their quality, not having any glare in eyes is a welcome improvement. As far as controls go, you'll find sliders for voice, game and "pulse" conveniently placed along the edges (perfect for for quick thumb access), along with a Mini-USB port for charging, a 3.5mm input for the detachable cable, a power switch and and a toggle for Virtual Surround Sound. The wireless connection is handled by an included USB dongle like the WSH, but this unit features it's own 3.5mm input. Our Sony rep wasn't aware of what it's for, but we'd imagine it'll let you get wired into the console. About the only thing we couldn't view on the headset was its onscreen status popups, although it's likely similar to the what we experience with the WSH.
The Sony booth was very loud, but the cans isolated noise well enough that we were able to gauge the sound quality a little bit. While we've generally placed vibrating earcups in the "gimmick" category, we actually came away quite impressed by the sound demo Sony had looping. The vibrations felt like a subwoofer on our head, rather than the buzzing of a cellphone. You can dial-in your preferred level of wub (or disable it) thanks to the volume control, and it'll get intense enough to please the most demanding bass heads. The surround sound emulation was also pleasing, with a good sense of directionality from the front to rear channels.
We'll be sure to give this headset a full run through our review gauntlet when it ships later this fall, but as it stands, $150 for this versatile, feature-packed headset should be a more-than-fair deal.
I'm interested, though I wish the wireless dongle was designed to use with other sources rather than having to be wired.

E3 2012: PlayStation Plus Subscribers Will Get At Least 3 Free Games a Month, Says Sony

Sony said they plan to make good on Sony Computer Entertainment president Jack Tretton's promise to revamp their PlayStation Plus club by offering more top-tier games at no cost.

Sony announced they are bumping up their "Instant Game Collection" to 10 free titles this week and a promise to offer at least three more free ones a month. They will also offer a new "Game of the Month" feature every four weeks.

Some of the new games available this week include Virtua Fighters 5: Final Showdown, Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath HD and Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine. PS Plus members will also be able to download new titles for free as well as free Blu-ray offerings including inFamous 2, MotorStorm: Apocalypse and LittleBigPlanet 2.

Tretton first announced the changes at Sony's E3 press conference earlier this week and awarded everyone in attendance with a free year voucher for the service. The rest of us will have to pay either $17.99 for three months or $49.99 a year.

Hopefully Vita is added soon. If they start giving away Vita games I get the feeling they will sell a lot of big memory cards.

If you have a PS3, there's really no reason to not have PS Plus IMO. Hell, I almost got my $50 worth just out of the free downloads I pulled down this week.

I know a lot more people will sign up for PS plus but will they lose more in download sales than they will gain in PS + subscribers?
            I'm just a nerd I guess
I see it as the other way actually. I believe this move will make them more money. When you look at the games they have in the store for download you can get at least 90 percent of them cheaper in the store. Then you also have to factor in the download time and space they take up on the HDD. So for a guy like me and many others there is no reason to buy a game out of the playstation store instead of say gamestop or best buy when going to the store will save me money, memory space, and time.

Let's use Ratchet and Clank for example. On the store now it is 60 bucks and you have to take however long it takes you to download 14 gigs and the space that takes up. You can go get the same game from the store for 40 bucks and have to download nothing. There really is no reason to buy that from Playstation store.

Now enter in PS Plus and seeing they have all these games or other things available for free that changes some things. I will glady give them 50 bucks a year for the chance to get all of this content and I will just worry about memory space when the time comes. So that gives them at least an extra 50 bucks a year from me and people like me instead of zero bucks.

If you go by Ratchet costing $60 from the PS Store, we all got our money's worth on Plus from just that one game.

I have a general PS Plus question.

If I become a Plus subscriber and I have a sub-account for my kids. Shouldn't they have the same benefits?

I used the free trial of Plus last year after the PSN crash and I don't think it worked that way. Does anyone here use a sub-account with plus?

                Thanks

The games and stuff I've downloaded from plus work on both my boys sub accounts. On the ps3 that they're downloaded of course.

You're probably either in a wrong region (in the UK trying to download a US demo for example) or you've got your account activated on to many PS3/PSP/Vitas.

Putting the exact error message helps though.

Stupid guess, but make sure you don't have any wacky parental control settings set on which disables you from downloading games that are at a certain level rating.

Those headphones got my attention. I was going to buy the $80 ones but atfer reading those aren't working well I think I'll wait for the Pulse headsets; I'm not sure if I would pay $150 for then, maybe I'd wait for a price drop.
