Playstation 4 Development Underway

I'm not quite ready for my next console, but I am interested in the technology it's going to use. However, I do not want them to create another disc format. I still feel like Blu-Ray is new even though it's been out for 5 years.

Agreed on all fronts... stick with bluray, and release this in 2014.

I bet it shows up on shelves in 2013, which will have been 7 years the PS3 has been out.

This is what I've been thinking. Especially, with Nintendo rumored to release their new console next year. I'm not ready now, but I know as soon as they unveil it, I'll become googley-eyed.

if these new consoles when they do release are like $600 all over again, Sony and MS can keep them.

That's the thing. It really depends on if Sony does another processor upgrade or changes the disc format. I still think the Cell Engine is very capable of being the guts of the PS4. If they keep Blu-Ray and the Cell and just upgrade the graphics card and add more media capability, the price could end up around $399, which is pretty reasonable IMO.

@31 I want to say development started early 2004, with a E3 2005 reveal. I could be wrong though.

I'm excited. Games are not changing much anymore. This was what happened near the end of last generation. Right before we had confirmation on the PS3 and 360, games were not much different and hardly anything innovative was happening.

I am looking forward to what companies are going to risk on the new consoles. We usually see a lot of new IP's that are being "tested" at the releases of the consoles. I am worried though, with how EA and their football games will do. Hopefully they learned from their mistakes this generation.

See but I don't think games changed that much from the ps2/xbox days as it is. I don't expect the next gen to be any different. They may look prettier but for the most part innovation has really lacked imo.

AI and just the core engines in games have advanced. I wouldn't be surprised if the majority of games on new consoles were all physics based, or had actual physics in parts of them.

I think true/real time physics will be the next big advancement as far as gameplay goes. Every game, not just sports games could benefit. Obviously there will be graphical and technological upgrades as well.

Graphical upgrades are the most obvious, but really think that we'll be seeing most games using RTP on new consoles. Any genre can benefit from the really.

With a lot more power behind the new consoles we could see games regularly using physics and fully destructible/interact-able environments. I can only imagine what it would be like to be able to see entire maps with no "fog" that hide things 200 feet ahead. Maps that are also destructible and AI that behaves even more realistic and follows Newton's laws. I may be ahead a few generations still, but I personally believe we are very close to that.

I'm all for the new consoles... considering the problems that both the PS3 and XBOX360 have had staying functional (RROD and the less familiar YLOD or whatever the PS3 problem is called)...but one thing with the PS4 is that it will need to beat the XBOX720 (for lack of a better name) to retail shelves to get a jump on the market place as alot of people converted from PS2 to XBOX360 like my brother before the PS3 really started to take off with its growth... the one thing the PS4 has going for it this time around though is that I doubt everyone and their mom will run out and get the new consoles if the prices are the norm for release as the 360 and PS3 are far from outdated... my plan for the new PS4 whenever it releases will probably be getting my original release BC PS3 and my brothers RROD XBox 360 fixed to trade both in for credit towards the PS4 and buy a PS2 to play my GTA and MGS trilogies... I'm really hoping they do what they did with God of War and Tomb Raider for more PS2 games... as I only see the PS4 playing PS3 and PS4 games

I cant wait for this to drop. 360 and PS3 prices will drop soon there after and I will go on a shopping spree!
