If I took out the Ethernet cable to my computer and hooked up my 360's cable to my modem will I be able to get online? Or would that cause some major problems with my internet connection/connectivity?

Internet Concerns...
Okay, here's the situation. I just bought a new black 360 with the wireless wifi. Unfortunately, I don't have a router, so i can't use the wifi. I thought "Well, no biggie, I'll just use my Ethernet cable". Turns out, my computer only has one ethernet cable, and that's hooked up to my modem (I'm with Suddenlink) which also only has one slot. My question is...

You should be able to get online, but since you are connecting directly to your modem you have to see if your modem gives out static or DHCP addresses. If it's a static address you will have to go and set your IP, Subnet, and Gateway on your 360.
Wireless routers are fairly cheap if you want to have both connected at the same time. You can get a DLink or a Netgear for $30-40.Member of The OS Baseball Rocket Scientists Association -

Yes, your internet will be fine. The internet isn't monogamous so it can have as many partners as you allow it. Your 360 won't know that your PC is spending time with the internet and vise versa.Oakland Athletics San Jose Sharks

Or you could buy a switch and another cable for around $10. That way, your PC and XBox could be hooked up at the same time.Comment

Re: Internet Concerns...
You need a router if you are coming off a modem. The modem only has 1 IP address it can give out. If you put both the Xbox and PC on the switch only 1 can be online at a time. You need a router because it can give off multiple IP addresses.Member of The OS Baseball Rocket Scientists AssociationComment

Be carefull with Netgear and linksys those have been my last two wierles modems. both have problems with staying connected after a while they will just start randamly disconecting. I have net gear and My first problems started around 4 months after I bought it. When I called customer support they wanted me to pay them like 100 bucks for customer support just to talk over the phone. I could buy two new modoms for that price. both my link sys and netgear after a while just randamly disconnect. I know its the modoms because if i hard wire it It works fine. right now my netgear will go a day maybe two with out haveing to be rebooted on a good day and on a bad day which is happing more and more I have to reboote it 3 or 4 times a dayYou should be able to get online, but since you are connecting directly to your modem you have to see if your modem gives out static or DHCP addresses. For the other side of the story, I've had my Linksys for 3 years, and although I have to reboot it once a week or so, it's great at picking up wireless signals. Hell, I have a friend who lives in the complex across the street from me, and he is able to use my connection with near full capability. Maybe that just says a lot about his antenna though lol.Be carefull with Netgear and linksys those have been my last two wierles modems. both have problems with staying connected after a while they will just start randamly disconecting. I knew that, I just figured he was planning on unplugging one to use the other anyway and this would save him the trouble. I should have been clearer in my post.Comment

I've owned Linksys for years hand haven't had a single issue witn them. The only issues I've ever had was when I used D-Link.Joshua:
