Re: Will Sony beat MS to the punch next gen?
I do think that Sony has of late improved their download speeds, which were terrible. I'm finally getting the same speed for downloads as the 360.I think Sony is on the right track plenty with their PSN service... and will be just as essential as is Live, especially with the introduction of Vita.
People sell it way too short still. I use both, see no difference with both when I play, other than I have to pay for one over the other for online.
Both offer a marketplace, both offer online gaming, both offer themes, both offer avatars, both offer trophies or achievements, both have leaderboards, both have in game chat, both have gamer id's, etc.
This is MSFT's second go round with an online service after a very simplistic one on the original XBox. For Sony's first go round, it is pretty damn good, and came a long way from the beginning. Next gen I am sure they will match for match as they do now. Especially with their introduction of the Playstation Entertainment Network branding they are sticking with.
In the end we all win, because of the games. I can't care less if MSFT sells 3% more total sales than Sony or vise/versa. Keep spitting out the games, and I will play on both.
To add, most on here only see what is in this country... other areas of the world like Europe and Japan where the PS3 dominates, their service is essential. Branding, just as the branding is here.
It will definitely be interesting for the next consoles, and I hope they focus on making the networks and features better, and not worry about gimmiky additions to distract from what needs to be addressed.
My one hope for next gen is that whatever we bought on PSN and XBL carries over. I don't have my doubts with XBL, but am a bit worried with PSN. Arcade and PSN games should work no problem on the next consoles if they keep a similar structure.Comment

Re: Will Sony beat MS to the punch next gen?
I think from day one microsofts goal with gaming was to create a console that could potentially take cable tv away from cable providers. the money is in XBOX live subs not games.
I expect the next console to be the jack of all trades media center."Good music transcends all physical limits, it's more then something you hear, it's something that you feel, when the author, experience, and passion is real" - Murs (And this is for)Comment

Re: Will Sony beat MS to the punch next gen?
Good point about other areas of the world. I think where Sony tends to struggle is in the branding of their online service(s). Xbox Live isn't perfect, but because of Xbox Live, Microsoft was successful in making "Xbox" a buzz word. It used to be that if some pop culture show was showing a gaming system it would be Playstation, but that has shifted somewhat to Xbox.I think Sony is on the right track plenty with their PSN service... and will be just as essential as is Live, especially with the introduction of Vita.

It's not just Live either. The Halo series, Gears, Forza and other exclusives have been hugely successful for the Xbox, making it a "go to" console. They made a very good transition from the first Xbox to the 360. Looking at where the popular non exclusives sell most tells that tale.Being kind, one to another, never disappoints.Comment

Re: Will Sony beat MS to the punch next gen?
Personally, I think Sony needs to beat MS out of the gate if they're worried about selling more consoles in North America.
Unfortunately, I think pure "video game consoles" are out the window and the next generation will be more do-it-all type consoles. Therefore, I think the prices will be in the $600+ range. I don't have any particular reason why I believe this, just a gut feeling that these companies want to expand the use of these machines and justify the high prices.
I'll add that I've always been a Sony fan and, unless I'm blown away by something MS does with the next system, will probably continue to purchase Sony systems for the foreseeable future. Though I doubt I'll be buying any of the next-gen systems until at least 1 price drop.Comment

Re: Will Sony beat MS to the punch next gen?
Well Rumor has it that your gamerscore and XBL profile will transfer over to the next Xbox Console, so I'll wait a year after it's released to get one.
There are hundreds of games on Xbox 360 I still haven't beaten nor got all 1000 achievements for, and they will all be available at ridiculous discounts to increase my collection and build my score up. (Achievement whore and gamer)
Plus it will give them time to work out the kinks and release more and better games. So no big hurry!
As far as who is beating who to the punch...who cares, I'm getting both either ways I'm a gamer not a fanboy!
And they both will get purchased a year later from their releases...Tons of PS3 games I've yet to get my trophies on or to complete

I am a Sony guy and always will be( just like I am a Nike guy).
I do think that they will try to go all out with Media/Entertainment features for the consoles. I think they will really expand on the internet feature on PS4. I think you will be able to download files, watch actual TV shows.
I will be okay with a $500 start. The games will probably be $65+. I really really hope that controllers are more durable. I wont really buy it until there is a price drop to around $400-450. I will wait until they have a good amount of hardcore games.Comment

Re: Will Sony beat MS to the punch next gen?
They don't want a repeat of the PlayStation 3, people buying it and primarily using it for features that do not drive revenue to Sony with few exceptions (Netflix, Blu-Ray)
I am not so sure Sony will go 'all out' either, I expect something a little more conservative to trim the early bleeding that is usually incurred early in a console's lifespan.
They want to avoid situations like this: Analyst: Sony May Never Break Even On PS3
Microsoft has the cash to keep pushing the envelope, all Sony beating them to market (i.e. a holiday season early) would possibly do is establish a lowest common denominator that multi-platform games would be designed for assuming the new units are a generation ahead of the WiiU.
Will most certainly own both units whenever and whatever they may be (doubt we'll ever own a WiiU though).Comment

Re: Will Sony beat MS to the punch next gen?
I am not sure if that will help Sony that much. I believe people have a lot more invested in the Xbox now, with gamerscores, community, and user interface. Not sure if any of my family or friends will get a Sony console, because I dare say that Xbox is slowly becoming to gaming what Nintendo use to be to gaming.Comment

Re: Will Sony beat MS to the punch next gen?
Wow, what a disgusting lie that turned out to be huh.....Haha, I know what you mean.
I bought a 360 because of this...
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/02ajPL3Kna4" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Only to have two of them RROD after about a six months.
By that time the PS3 was just coming out, so I spent mad $$$ on that. I bought three games with it. Motorstorm, Virtua Fighter, and Resistance: Fall of Man. That was a pretty hefty purchase,
Monday I will be getting a new PS3 for $300. SMH.
I tell myself I won't get a new console during week one. But, I know I will be there somehow.

In the US only though overseas its not as a big lead as you'd think, and MS is even lagging behind Nintendo in Japan where Sony is king.I am not sure if that will help Sony that much. Re: Will Sony beat MS to the punch next gen?
From a worldwide point of view it is very close between the two, but the Wii still has them beat big time.
PS3 - 51.8 million
360 - 55 million
Wii - 87 millionComment

Re: Will Sony beat MS to the punch next gen?
PSN is missing is party chat/cross game chat. Plus no headsets provided with the console. So there is less communication online.I think Sony is on the right track plenty with their PSN service... and will be just as essential as is Live, especially with the introduction of Vita.

Another plus for xbox live is free trial provided for ALL xbox live arcade games as soon as they release.Comment
