I was thinking the same thing. I feel like if you are using the IR blaster then you likely are using the HDMI in for a cable/sat receiver and using the media apps, and you are likely using voice commands with your kinect. They include the IR blaster to replace the kinect, but then no options for a mic other than a headset. Would be nice if they even just added a USB mic peripheral.
I was looking at remotes that could do the full control of the Xbox app (dvr, numbers, etc.) so I wouldn't always have to turn a controller on...but also the pain that the controller can't do volume. I settled for the base xbox media remote for the time being, but this fall the PDP Talon is releasing which I preorded...essentially is the xbox app remote physical remote including all the xbox face buttons, is officially licensed and isn't a huge clunky universal remote. It also will have a headset port, so put on one of these nub mics and i think it will be the best option.
