    Re: Xbox One

Polygon says EA, Valve and PUBG have been discussed as acquisiton targets by Microsoft to shore up the first party issues.

EA would be insane. All sports, Star Wars, etc titles exclusive to Xbox.

Valve I think makes some sense as a merger with the games business and a larger ecosystem play. Windows Store games could be branded as Steam and the services could meet somewhere in the middle (in addition to acquiring a lot of valueable IP).

PUBG, whatever. It's a big game, not my thing. Makes sense though.

Something larger would be huge. PUBG would be something, but not really solving the long term problem.

EA, while it sounds crazy, would make some sense...MS needs a LOT of first party games, not just one every couple of years. Either they buy a bunch of studios (which they've done to horrible results) or go big? Interesting thoughts.

If they acquired EA, would that make EA Sports, Battlefield, and Star Wars exclusives? That would be crazy!

I don’t see that happening. Would be awful for gaming and that really doesn’t solve their issue. They need new IPs to put beside Forza, gears and halo.

I have my issues with EA, but as gamers, that acquisition would be a disaster. All of those exclusive deals would really hurt competition.

Valve could be interesting. PUBG is a whatever move. It's by far the most likely one of the bunch, though.

I don't think all the sports IPs would become exclusive, for contractual reasons. Folding EA Access into Game Pass, expanding the presence on PC (combined with Play Anywhere) is a heck of a value proposition.

Would be cool for Microsoft to acquire EA but as others have said there is no way the games would be exclusive.

You’d probably see similar things to what Sony has with Destiny, what Xbox had for awhile with FIFA legends only on Xbox, etc.

I’d really like to see Microsoft get more into the Asian market but it would have to be received well by them and I don’t see that happening.

I'm an Xbox gamer. I always have been. I still prefer the Xbox to the PS4. But I'm glad Sony is kicking their a** right now. I remember that disastrous always online crap at rollout this gen. Then them pushing everything but games. It's cool to innovate, but you're a gaming console, do that well first then jump to other things.

Technically speaking, per 360 standards, they had done gaming well. Sometimes you can be a bit too early with technology and the masses aren't ready for it.

We are essentially always online anyways. It’s funny to see people trash that idea. It’s here. If you didn’t go online twice a week your console and games wouldn’t even work most of the time.

It was just too early then. Now, I agree, we're there. It should happen organically. I may have 6 actual disks; everything else is digital. 360 is what cemented Xbox as my main console. PS3 was for exclusives only. I have 3 subs (EA Access, Game Pass and XBOX live) so I'm not against it at all. Coming into this gen and the messaging surrounding XB1 it just felt forced. Xbox has righted many of their wrongs but I can't help but feel like those initial missteps put them behind the eight ball. As big a fan as I am, I held off picking it up at launch (probably wouldnt have been able to find one anyway...) because of that stuff. All the while Sony just picked up where the PS3 left off and kept rolling.

Yeah, in 2018. This wasn't the case 5 years ago. You were connected online but you didnt have to be just to play games. See the majority reaction to the XB1 initial release details from gamers. Microsoft themselves have even admitted they shot themselves in the foot with that. Thats why they changed it.

                                Re: Xbox One

Always online was only there to appease those who need to trade their disks in. You trade in your disk/activation code to a retailer, then you can still play the game without a disk until your console goes back online to verify you don't own the code anymore - hence the required checkin to verify people aren't essentially playing games for free.

The problem was they were trying to make something that pleased everyone yet still try to move towards digital. But without a good way to do it, you end up with a system that nobody likes. The problem was that even though most probably are always connected to the internet, the backlash was that it was required.

They ended up with disks being the same format as they originally had - a disk or digital license on your account to play a game. However they could have possibly done a couple things:

-Done away with trade ins. (angers the constant trade in/swapping games crowd, which probably is a good portion of gamers.)

-Require the online checkin ONLY if you are trading a game in - to prevent someone from keeping their console offline and still having a valid disk code. Have a trade in form on the MS website, on gamestop, etc. Log in with your xbox account. choose the registered disk code you want to trade in. Get a printable slip or an email with barcode. Give directions to turn on your home xbox and connect to the internet to refresh your account. Get a verification email with a code that verifies you refreshed your xbox. Go into the retailer with your trade in barcode, disk, and verification code.

(probably still angers the trade in crowd because it is too complicated. Then need to get retailers to get a system to work with this. Need to build out their license removal system, etc. Probably would have taken some time as that is pretty convoluted. An occasional online checkin seemed to be simpler for everyone - and they must have had some 360 metrics that said x percent of consoles are online every so often most of the time for number of hours played in game to think this was a decent enough option at least to start.)

The EA thing is all speculation, I haven't seen anything other than it being a random guess by a/some people. However if they did, they almost assuredly would be console exclusive. Most gamers are locked into a single game. FUT and MUT are life. If PS4 had say 6 mil in each of those games - it would be a good bet that a LOT of those would get the XBOX to play the only game they know. They wouldnt simply say - eh, ok bye. I would wager at least 75% if not more. Fifa and Madden have a huge yearly dedicated crowd, i don't see a lot of them simply giving it up.

I don't see that as any sort of positive for anyone unless it ends exclusivity. But even non exclusiveness couldnt save the dreamcast not having EA games, let alone sports. PS4 is in a much better position, but all EA games as a console exclusive really could put a huge dent into them, especially as new consoles come out. Not sure how that would benefit anyone.
