Just speculating but they'd be able to verify every Video game title that get's activated to your consoles.

Analytics, they'd be able to track your gaming session activity. How long you play for in a session, what kind of games you are playing, what you search for on the internet; and then in turn maybe set up Ads when you sign into your online profile based on your preferences.

Wow. So the gamer wouldn't benefit from that at all then? Or am I just missing something?

I really don't like the idea of my internet going out or Live being down for maintenance or whatever and not being able to play period.

I'm guessing it would be easier for them to put out System updates, and patches for the games while always being Online.

However other than that I can't think of any more direct benefits for the Gamer at this moment in time.

We all are, most are just reacting to rumors out of context. The always-on DRM on a game would be an option for publishers to use rather than a requirement, like Sony's patent to put physical DRM on discs. Doesn't mean it's going to happen, and really we need all the details before it's affect can be accurately realized.

The whole thing could be an orchestrated leak to gauge reaction too.

Yea but I think they would know before hand people are going to flip out you remove used games from the mix.

I'm booty closed to online but let's so acting like sp gaming isn't a staple of these systems.

Ignoring that it's one reason why so many games rook a crap this gen anyway

The used games rumor is a bigger deal to me because traditionally games have been something material that you hold in your hand and plug into the system (disc, cartridge etc.) So if I want to give to another person to use, and me no longer have it, why shouldn't I be allowed to do that?

I see your point about wanting your system to be solely for the games, but this generation showed us that is no longer the case. Just the name "360" was come upon to project the user in the center of the experience with a 360 degree circle of entertainment at their choosing. One degree is gaming, another movies and another music etc.

That is the direction MS tried to go and for the most part have been very successful in doing so. So, just like you would need internet for your Roku, you'll need it for your Xbox. And I don't think that is an insult to the single player gamer. To me it's more or less a comment to the single player gamer that says, "The single player experience is part of a larger entertainment experience that is Xbox."
Being kind, one to another, never disappoints.

Game systems haven't solely been about playing games since the playstation 2 was able to be used as a DVD player. The more options the systems have, the less likely they are to be labeled a niche product, which means more sales. It is also better for consumers since you don't have to own 50 different boxes doing 50 different things.

I didnt say they should be solely for games, I was actually looking at the post above DQs about that.

This entire internet only thing, if the excuse for doing it is netflix.. my point was, I have that covered and don't need that because its readily available on plenty of other devices already, even dedicated ones.

Also that single player gaming is the staple of gaming.. not all of these extras with online. Online is butter on the top but shouldnt be the first priority in this context.

                          Re: Xbox 720

Online all the time is for marketing/data tracking... that's why and the only reason why.

Side tangent; Verizon has already stated that their new DVRs will have cameras and microphones in them, in-order to "spy" upon you for better advertisement marketing. Source -- These new DVRs will be scanning your room all the time looking/listening for data to upload in order to create a better marketable person.

Now the 720 will also have a DVR built into it, it already will have a cam/mic (kinect 2) built in, what is stopping them from doing the same? Nothing, so, more than likely they will do the same, oh wait they kinda already said they will. So... for example; the Xbox notices a Budweiser can in the back of the room, it will then upload that to your data profile, which will then produce more commercials/adverts based around that. Add in the lip-reading and the tracking of your emotional states, makes for a advertisers/marketers wet dream.

Also add in the new tech that will track what stores you go into (through your phone/apps) and send you adverts/sales, again based off your marketing profile. All of these little separate techs are all intertwined and done for a reason, marketing/advertisements or should I say $.

Now one last piece of information, Kinect 2 will track how many people in your room at all times and will also keep track of what subscribed content you purchase/view and how many are watching and if that is allowed. Meaning if you purchase the next UFC fight and call your buddies to come over and watch, well if they haven't subscribed to that content on their own, your ish will be shut off and/or they will be charged to watch said content. Source

A new Microsoft patent will allow the company to remotely surveil, and effectively count American citizens as they order online or cable pay-per-view from the comfort of their own homes.

                          From the patent:

A content presentation system and method allowing content providers to regulate the presentation of content on a per-user-view basis ... Consumers are presented with a content selection and a choice of licenses allowing consumption of the content. The users consuming the content on a display device are monitored so that if the number of user-views licensed is exceeded, remedial action may be taken.

The patent, submitted on April 26, 2011, and passed on Nov. 1, 2012, essentially allows the company to remotely turn on any cameras, be they mobile or from something like the Xbox Kinect, and count the number of 'consumers' watching licensed content.

What Microsoft dubs 'complex algorithms' will not only count how many people are consuming that Mixed Martial Arts Championships, but also for how long they consumed the content, paving the way for charging users for half or even quarter uses of content.

                          From the patent:

In the case of the mobile display device, the display 105 is generally designed for use by one person but it is possible that more than one person may be able to view content on the display 105. As such the consumer detector uses data from the camera or capture device 102 to determine the number of consumers. In one example, camera 102 is an RGB imaging camera and the consumer detector analyzes one or successive images from the camera to ensure that the licensed number of users per view is enforced.

"Enforced" means the patent also gives licensers using Microsoft's surveillance 'product' the right to 'shut off' content if an unauthorized amount of users start to watch.

So you may want to tell the folks you invite over for the next fight to shut off their cell phones and remove the batteries prior to beginning the show.

Look at people's accounts to see what they ordered if its that serious like everybody else.

If i want to watch a movie it wont be on my game console.

Don't you see, it doesn't matter if you are not watching thru your console, with the always on, always connected 720/kinect2, it will be tracking what you watch regardless of where its coming from. So even if you buy through say Comcast/DTV,etc... the audio/video capture/listening will still be there, tracking, listening, watching, uploading, enforcing, get ready this is the new way they are going.

Heh, we're getting into tinfoil hate territory here. Google got into trouble all over the world just for recording the locations of wifi hotspots or something. MS or anyone aren't going to get free reign to all of the above without explicit opting into such a program. If you don't want to be their free marketing analysis you should probably stop on forums too while you're at it.

Also as to not needing to release information to know it's a bad idea... it almost never is. That's called research, you don't assume anything. Again, MS has generated billions in revenue this generation getting people pay for Netflix and multiplayer. Who would have guessed that in 2005?

Note that a lot of the responses for the online connectivity are harsher while the used game comments contain many concessions about price and whatnot that would make it OK. It's all marketing and tuning their product, which won't please 100% anyways, for maximum ROI while aligning with longterm goals.
