Re: OS Steam and Computer Gaming Thread
I'd also recommend Crusader Kings II if you're a Game of Thrones fan, because there's a fan mod that basically turns it into the best GoT game in existence.Last edited by Trapper700; 06-21-2013, 07:49 PM.Comment

Re: OS Steam and Computer Gaming Thread
Ok I don't care too much about a lot of the dlc small editions...
I think I'm going with:
CK2
CK2: The Old Gods (Still not sure about this)
Victoria 2
Victoria 2: A Heart of Darkness
Victoria 2: A House DividedJoshua:

Re: OS Steam and Computer Gaming Thread
The Old Gods was the biggest of the CKII DLCs. I don't think you'll miss out of anything big from not getting The Republic and Sword of Islam, other than the ability to play as a Muslim character or as a Republic. most of the actually gameplay changes were applied in the patches for the base game(the AI will use most if not all of the features of those DLCs).
Legacy of Rome is a bit different. without it you don't get the retinues(standing armies) and I think some of the Roman specific events and decisions. Retinues can be useful, but I sometimes end up forgetting about them all together. The game was based on building an army by way of levies, so it's not that huge a deal. they can also make the game too easy once you do build them up.
without The Old Gods, I know you don't get the new starting date. not 100% sure of the other features though. obviously you don't get to play as any Pagan characters, but I think the new rebel system is also tied to the DLC.
Out of all the DLCs for CKII, The Old Gods is definitely my favorite. And if there were only one I was going to get, it would be the one.Comment

Re: OS Steam and Computer Gaming Thread
For Vicky 2 just get the two main dlcs (heart of darkness and a house divided).
The first that came out was a house divided, it adds a new start date (1861) which guarantees the American civil war. Ive never played without it so i cant say what it adds to the base game
Heart of darkness is the newest which adds a brand new colonial system based on your navy and naval base levels. This new system is leaps and bounds better than the one before and adds a lot of fun to colonization. As soon you (or another country) unlocks the tech required to colonize it becomes a made rush to colonize places like Africa, islands in the Pacific and sometimes a few areas in the middle east.
HOD also adds newspapers which just adds some headlines after reading a few you wont look at them ever again. But the biggest thing and why I think HOD is essential is the new international crisis. What this does is say a existing country or one that could be made (Poland for example) has cores in another country then a crisis can spring up to liberate them. For example Poland does not exist at the start of the game but it has cores in Prussia and Russia. Depending on factors like the economy, happiness and others tension will rise in that area and can escalate in a great war to liberate Poland from those who currently hold its cores. All 8 great powers are forced to take a side (unless they don't which they lose a huge amount of prestige). It may not reach war if a peaceful solution is found but if not you (and those who join your side) will engage in a world war. The hidden addition in this is that it makes diplomacy so much more important because your enemies will almost always side against you. Say I am playing as Prussia, France, Austria almost always hate me, so i must keep Great Britain, Spain and others close otherwise otherwise Prussia would get steamrolled.
I would say both Vicky 2 DLCs are really required but I am a little biased Victoria 2 is my favorite of the Paradox games.
Also I was thinking about buying NBA 2k13 on the PC. Are the mods mostly just graphics or adding things 2k left out like jerseys? Or are there mods that improve franchise mod at all?Last edited by JWR3232; 06-21-2013, 11:12 PM.New York Yankees

Re: OS Steam and Computer Gaming Thread
Good luck. You'll sure get a lot of action down there.
1-2 years, unless you either cheat, or the US comes to save you in time.
With the base Victoria 2, I did manage to survive once with the US help. I eventually took over Hati, Cuba(after they revolted from Spain), and started colonizing Africa when I got the tech level to do it. so it was a weird Republic of Texas. Amazingly, the US never tried to attack me even though they had "claims" to Texas due to the Manifest Destiny decision they activated.Comment

Re: OS Steam and Computer Gaming Thread
Realized if you use the create a ruler thing you start with no family at all.. So I'm going to just pick a current ruler...
Game is deep so taking time to try and learn as much as I can.Joshua:

Re: OS Steam and Computer Gaming Thread
yeah, the create-a-ruler is ultimately a create-a-dynasty tool. you start as a founder of a great house, so in-game you wont have parents, brothers, or sisters. You can choose to start with a wife I think, and some kids(at least sons), but it'll add on to your starting age.
when I created rulers, I tend to get traits and stats to make a decent ruler between the 24-28 age range with no kids, no wife. Then once started, marry someone young and hope you don't die in battle or from some disease before you have an heir.
also, don't feel bad about starting over a bunch of times. I've had the base game since it released and have yet to "finish" a game as I tend to start over multiple times. I don't think I've ever gotten to the 1300's and seen the Mongols invade yet.Last edited by Solidice; 06-22-2013, 11:48 AM.Comment

Re: OS Steam and Computer Gaming Thread
Ok.. question. When watching some videos online there are some differences I'm wondering about.
After picking ruler and starting game.. in the videos at the top at right of the religion tab there is a tab that says "Characters".. I don't have that.
Also when the little pop ups come up, like at the start about choosing an ambition, in the video he clicks on the pop up and it takes him right to ambition select area.
Mine doesn't do anything and seems the ambition selection area is different.
So assuming there's a DLC that adds these changes or am I just losing it lolJoshua:

Ok found the Character Search Button. An update moved it to bottom of mini-map...Ok.. question. When watching some videos online there are some differences I'm wondering about.

and I know where ambition section is but clicking on the bubble that pops up doesn't automatically take you there like in vids. Guess it was another change in an update.?.?.
Ok back to learning.Last edited by Skyboxer; 06-22-2013, 12:06 PM.Joshua:
