Alright, so my 80 gb fat ps3 died on me yesterday after 6-7 years. I went out and got a.160 slim but my question is i have an external hdd that had some stuff on it that i copied over from my fat. When i hook it in the slim, it doesnt read it.. when i go under music or pictures...nothing, so anyone know whats up and why not reading whats on it. Any settings i need to change?

You have to reformat it. You can't just put the old hard drive in the new PS3. Unless you made a backup on a USB stick or used cloud save. You lost everything.

Do you really care where I sent this from?

        Re: Need help

Aschulz484, when your PlayStation 3 reads files, it attempts to access them in a certain way. In this case, it automatically searches for folders with the names MUSIC, PICTURES, and VIDEOS (don't quote me on those being the exact names, but it's something to that effect), based on whichever medium you are in at the XMB.

That said, you can do one of two things:

        1) Create three folders on your external from the root with those names in all caps (it might be a variation of those names, like non-plural or PHOTOS instead, etc.) and copy the respective files into those folders.

        2) Instead, ask the PlayStation 3 to look through your entire HDD. This is probably what you hoped to do anyway, but like I said, it does an automatic search for specific folders instead. Do manually explore your external, press Triangle to bring up the options frame, and select "Display All." From there, you should be able to locate the files you're searching for.

Good luck! I hope this works out for you.

Wtf!! I dont remeber posting that second reply in here. Lol

But well im in here... I already reformated my external hdd when I first had it and did a backup on my old ps3. Everything copied over. But now when I plug it into the new ps3...nothing. I use to plug it in and the hdd name would pop up and I could hit triangle to display all the stuff on it.

                Re: Need help

Wait, you simply backed up your files? Like, you had the PS3 perform a backup? Or did you literally copy/paste files over from your PS3 into your external?

If it's the latter, everything I said should still hold true. If it's the former, you have to go back to System Settings, and select the option to restore a backup you made onto your external HDD.

                  Re: Need help

Yea, I had it do the back up on my old ps3 cuz at the time I was looking at getting a larger hdd for my playstation but didn't get around to it so I know it was formatted right. Its just weird that when I plug it in, nothing shows up at all. My flash drive shows up though and I can trasnfer stuff on to that.

I don't care about restoring whatever was on there anymore. I actually think I deleted what was on it. Lol. Nows its just the fact I can't transfer anything on to it which was the main reason I got the external hdd.
