I have a couple of questions about the PS4 due to a lack of knowledge about technical stuff.

I'm reading several posts here that talk about the superior power of the PS4 in technological terms. How much more powerful are we talking about, and how does the difference translate to games (like Madden or NCAA, which is what I mostly play)?

Also, I've heard a lot that games typically look better in terms of colors and jaggies on the 360 than on the PS3. Is there a reason for that, and is there reason to suspect that PS4 graphics won't be as high in quality as XB1?

Thanks in advance. I'm prepping to tell my wife that I'm going to drop some serious cash, but I need to know what the heck I'm doing before I drop the bomb.

The primary reason people notice the differences between the 360 and PS3 is due to the fact that all games that are cross-platform games are made on the 360 and than ported to the PS3.

The PS4 has set aside more power than the Xbox One has. It's something like 5 RAMs to 3 or something. In computer talks, I understand that's a huge amount. Xbox One touts "we have the cloud, our developers can have more powerful games because of it", but the PS4 also has the ability to use the cloud in that regards.

Compute Units (12 vs 18), ROPS (16 vs 32) and 5GB DDR3 vs 7GB GDDR5 (both have 8gb, but the xbone OS takes up 3gb, while the PS4's only uses 1gb). Same architecture (AMD Radeon GCN) and same frequency (800mhz). Though with lowest common denominator, it might not be too relevant on multiplatform games but the PS4 has a lot more potential if devs want to take advantage of it (which I assume 1st party devs will). Probably a 50-60% performance advantage to the PS4.

Sony is also allowing developers to use a certain number of the compute units (4?) for stuff that benefits from parallel processing. It's to alleviate stress from the rather anemic CPU.

Xbone's 8 core processor will only be able to use 6 of its 8 cores for actual games since 2 of them are being reserved for the OS, Kinect and the Game Streaming stuff, while Sony has a dedicated processor reserved for that stuff on the PS4, leaving all 8 cores free for games.

I have heard that developers worked from the 360 this generation and ported games over to the PS3.

I wonder if it's likely to work the same way in the next generation of consoles, or if the PS4's superior specs would inspire developers to start on the PS4 and then port to XB1. I suppose there's no way to know the answer to that, but it makes a difference to me as a consumer to know which console is the primary one for developers.

I really like my PS3 and could see myself buying a PS4.

Cell processing under the PS3's hood was not easy to develop with, so "last-gen" most multi-platform games were specifically designed under the 360 toolkit then ported over, as bigbob already mentioned. Undoubtedly Sony wanted to change that, so for this next generation, they worked with developers directly to create a system for ease-of-development over much else. Sony also gave the PS4 8 GBs of RAM, which is a massive upgrade over the PS3's power (I think only 512 MB).

For the X1, I think the power is nearly identical--the RAM is not GDDR5 like the PS4, but rather 8 GB of DDR3. I think the former has higher bandwidth but has latency problems in comparison. The higher bandwidth may prove necessary when developers want to push more data through (higher polygon counts and more complex image processing).

For all intents and purposes, I think the two will perform nearly the same, but the X1 has an alternate configuration based around its CPU and GPU that will require different calculations as opposed to the PS4. It remains to be seen what that means for game development, but I think up to this point, the PS4's total package of hardware edges out the X1 in terms of maximum performance.

In developmental terms, it seems the PS4 has the edge this round in re: ease of use, so you might see developers porting from PS4 to X1 this generation instead.

Now I don't claim to be an expert so if anyone with more knowledge would like to correct me or fill in any blanks, feel free.

Wow. I'm glad I asked. I feel like such a dinosaur when reading this stuff, as it all sounds like Martian to me.

It seems like it would make a difference if Sony was more aggressive in getting to the developers with kits before MS when it comes to deciding which console will be the primary one for designing multi-platform games.

Perhaps a question to ask when determining which system to buy is how likely is it that game developers use the full power of the system when designing games. I read a lot of stuff about last gen games simply not using all the machines' power (and not even coming close, but this was for sports games, so I don't know about other genres). If that's the case, the power difference might not mean so much.

If it's not the case, though, then the difference is a bigger deal. This is a very useful thread. I have both systems on pre-order but will mostly likely have to commit to one now and get the second down the road.

Europe was delayed last time so I have no idea.. I don't think we can say either way what it means for U.S. date.

If that date is real, I'm going with what other people have told me with the date of 10/29/13. I'd be thrilled! Would get it before Extra Life and would stream my entire 24 hour marathon putting the PS4 through it's paces.

That's also the release date of Battlefield 4.

I cant see em doing that simply with Battlefield 4 and COD Nov 5th they would lose so much for ps3 I cant see it

Happy that Microsoft changed their policies. Better for the industry and gamers as a whole.

Won't sway me to leave the PS4 though. They had our backs from the get go.
